But first we need to set some baselines. It may not be out of the question for a golfer who normally shoots 100 to improve his/her game by 10 strokes and start averaging 90. Of course this would be a huge improvement, and any golfer who shoots these kinds of scores would probably be thrilled with improvement that is half that good.

It is another thing to take a golfer who averages 80 and have him shave off 10 stokes and start averaging 70. That is asking way too much, and we start to enter into the realm of being ridiculous. However, if that golfer were to shave 2-4 strokes off his score consistently, that would also be huge, and it might be doable.

So although the 10 stroke improvement goal is somewhat of a moving target, this series of articles will be geared for the player who shoots 100 and wants to shoot 90.
Why an improvement of 10 strokes, and not 5 strokes, for example? Well a double digit improvement would be huge if attainable, and the number is rather dramatic and has some shock impact, I think. After all, even if our fictional player were to improve by 5 strokes he would no doubt be thrilled. But the chance of improving by 10 strokes the score of a player who typically shoots 100 might be enough motivation to have him give it a try.

There is another caveat that is important. The player needs to be able to hit the ball a reasonable distance with a driver. In today’s world that would be about 250 yards for men, and about 210 yards or so for women. With today’s high tech drivers, this is really not that much distance. They don’t have to hit every shot that far (I’m sure they don’t if they are shooting 100 or more), but they should have the strength to do so. If players have the strength and ability to hit a ball that far, they can possibly reach almost all par 4’s they are likely to play in two shots. I’m assuming that players who can hit drives that far are hitting them off the fairway and into trouble a lot of the time, or oftentimes just don’t hit the ball solidly. If the reason a player is shooting 100 is that he or she is now an octogenarian and can no longer hit the ball very far, his chances of improvement are certainly lowered. He or she can, however, possibly make big improvements in the area of putting.

And putting is where we will start. We’ll begin with the Medicus putter training aid, which comes free, by the way, with the purchase of a Medicus driver. The main strategy here is to eliminate 3 putts. In particular we’ll use some fun practice games that have been dreamed up by the famous short game guru, Dave Pelz. These games will help golfers to putt the ball the proper distance. And, by the way, do you know what the proper distance to hit a putt is? Here’s the answer: 19 inches past the hole. Dave Pelz determined that more putts have a chance to go in the hole if they are struck with a force strong enough to make the ball go 19 inches past the hole. Like many things in life, saying you should hit a putt 19 inches past the hole and actually doing that are two different things. We’ll get into those details in the first article of the series.

After working and improving our putting by 5 strokes a round, we’ll go after the final 5 strokes using the Medicus dual hinge driver and the Medicus Power Maximus (Medicus Power Max), which is a weighted driver training aid. You will have to work and you will have to practice. But there is no reason that practicing can’t be fun, especially using Medicus products.

Putt To Make It:

Many golfers on long putts try to just get the ball close to the hole. They often will aim for a 3 foot circle. The problem with this strategy is that you are just increasing your margin for error. A better approach would be to always putt to make it. This means that on every putt your goal is to make the putt.

This does not mean you have to hit the putt hard in order to make sure to get it to the hole. Instead think of making every putt by seeing the ball dying into the hole on the last rotation. This way your misses will be much closer.

Trust Your First Impression:

When you are reading greens it can be very easy to get overwhelmed and start doubting how the putt will break. When you first approach a green take a bit of time to look at the putt from a few different angles. After that simply come up with a good solid first impression and stick with that.

It is very important to be decisive on your putts. You must trust the read you make and believe the ball will go in the hole. This does not mean you will make every putt. Your goal is to give every putt the best chance of going in the hole and this way of thinking will allow you to do that. Remember that even the best professionals misread greens so when you do misread a few putts just forget about them and believe your next read will be accurate.

Focus On Your Successful Putts:

If you play a lot of golf then you will inevitably miss a lot of putts. It can become very easy to dwell on these misses. However there is no doubt that you have made a fair number of putts too and some of them have probably been quite spectacular. Be sure to celebrate all the great putts you have made. This will ingrain into your mind the good putts you have made and will help to build your putting confidence.

Be sure to remind yourself of some of the greatest putts you have ever made. One good thing to do is each day before you go to bed think about the top 3 putts you have ever made. Replay them in your mind as vividly as you can and really experience the joy and satisfaction that making those putts gave you. Never suppress your emotions on successful putts, of course do not brag too much either, instead celebrate internally so you do not appear rude to your playing partners.

Do Not Think Too Much:

It is easy when you are about to hit your putts to start thinking about all sorts of things. Make sure that when you are about to hit your putts you are focused on your target. So make sure to pick out a target like a blade of grass on the edge of the hole or somewhere to the right or left of the hole if you expect the putt to break. Also make sure your target is something small.

Do not think about putting mechanics or how you made the last putt or about how the putt will break as you are about to hit the putt. Just focus on the target and let your mind and body strike the putt in the most accurate manner that will allow the putt to go to the hole with the right direction and speed. Perfect Alignment

This simple drill will give you a great visual aid during address that will assist your putting alignment. With proper alignment putter head will have a better chance to consistently hold its path better allowing the ball to start on the correct target line.
When you place your golf ball on the putting green prior to picking up your ball marker, align the brand name or some manufactures are now providing lines on the side of the golf ball so that it points down your target line. Now as you address the putt, use the line on the golf ball as a back up to what you see with your eyes. You should feel that the line on the golf ball is parallel with your eyes and target line.
As the golf ball rolls, note how the label or line is traveling in relation to the target line. If the golf ball is rolling end over end then you struck the putt on the correct line. However, if the golf ball begins to roll on the right or left side of the ball, the putter head path was heading in that direction instead of at the target. Holding your finish will also give you a clue to where your putter path was during your stroke.

Putt to a tee

Why would you do this? You know how some days the hole looks smaller than others. What would you do if the hole always looked bigger to you? You would be able to become to be more confident and to make more putts.

Recently, a student brought another technology driven training aid to a golf lesson. This aid employers laser technology. The device is designed to help improve putting. She asked me what I thought of the device as a training aid. It wasn’t the first time I had seen or heard about it, but it started me thinking: How many laser-based devices are out there and can they really help cut your golf handicap?

Brief History of Lasers

The name LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Albert Einstein first theorized about the process that makes lasers possible in 1917. In the ’50s, Charles Townsend and Arthur Schawlow invented the maser (microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation), a technology similar to the laser. Then in 1960, Theodore Maiman invented the ruby laser, considered to be the first successful optical or light laser. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Lasers capitalize on the way light interacts with electrons. Electrons exist at specific energy levels or states characteristic of that particular atom or molecule. When you bump electrons to a higher energy level by injecting energy, “excess” energy is given off as light. The wavelength or color of the emitted light is precisely related to the amount of energy released. Depending on the particular lasing material being used, specific wavelengths of light are absorbed and specific wavelengths emitted.

LASERS and Golf

Lasers are ideal for a wide variety of uses, including eye surgery and metal cutting. While they have numerous properties, the one most associated with LASERS is accuracy. Applications requiring pinpoint accuracy are well suited to this technology. So it would be only natural that this technology when applied to golf could help with one’s putting, where accuracy is in high demand. That’s exactly what we found. Here are three examples:

It’s called “left-hand-low”.   Both Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer felt they would have been better on the green if they had learned this way and it’s not too late for you to experiment with it.

If you’re serious about winning, you need to roll the ball in the hole consistently.  The pros never leave anything to chance.  They understand that the relationship between pace and line is crucial and by experimenting with this putting drill you may just get a better handle on both pace and keeping your ball in line.

If you miss a lot to the left or the right, chances are you’re not thinking much about how you grip the putter or, if you’re like me, you’ve been gripping your putter the same since your dad showed you how all those years ago.

If you grip your putter like most people do, the same or similar to how you grip your woods and irons, than its just far too easy to let the clubface rotate open or closed and push the ball right or left. 

Follow this popular technique used by many pros and you’ll notice the difference in control right away.

Take your normal grip with your left hand on top and now reverse it so that your left hand is now on the bottom.  It may not seem it at first but this is most ergonomically correct and natural way to grip the putter.

Now do the following to set up and put correctly every time:

1. Get your feet at least shoulders-width apart, knees pointed slightly out.  Bend from your hips, relax your arms and make sure your head is just inside the ball.  The ball should be about an inch in front of center with your putter in the center of your stance.

2. Your forearms should make a triangle and your wrists should never move.  Your grip should be tense but low on the tension scale – don’t choke it to death!  Pressure chokes off feel.

3. Locate a spot a couple of feet in front of you on your line – a bleached spot perhaps.  Now follow this exact routine every time – look at the spot, the hole, the spot and now…stroke.

4. Understand that the putting stroke is one complete movement.  Bring the putter back ¼ and forward through the ball ¾ for a nice, sooth roll with good feel.  Obviously, bring the putter back farther on longer shots and try to maintain that 3-1 ratio.

Now you have a great set-up and by utilizing the “left-hand-low” grip, your lead hand will do the work, keeping yourself from “pushing” the putter into the ball or “stabbing” at it which will make the ball skip around.

Try it on the practice green or in the hallway or kitchen at your home until you get as comfortable with this hold as you are with your full-swing grip, then go and putt the lights out.

If the fit is too tight, do not sand a shaft to fit in the head. In this case, you would need to ream or bore the hosel.

C. – Use a two-part epoxy to coat the inside of the hosel and the surface of the roughened shaft. Insert the shaft into the hosel and rotate it slightly to make sure all epoxy is covering both surfaces. A helpful hint is to turn the club upside down and firmly tap the end of the shaft several times on a piece of hard wood. This ensures that the shaft is inserted all the way into the hosel.

D. – After the epoxy has fully cured, measure the club for final length. After determining correct length, wrap masking tape around the shaft and mark the cutting point at the butt end. Trim the butt end as described in step “A” above.

E. – Using a solvent such as denatured alcohol, clean the butt end of the shaft the distance that will be covered by the grip plus a couple of inches. Wrap the shaft in a spiral fashion with double-sided grip tape. Wrap to a point a couple of inches longer than the grip will cover and leave a small gap between wraps.

F. – Pour enough grip solvent into the grip so that as you shake it around it coats all surfaces (remember to hold your finger over the vent hole). Then pour the remaining solvent over the double-sided tape. With the tape still wet, slide the grip all the way up until it stops. You will have a few minutes to adjust the alignment of the grip before the solvent sets.

First, consider your alignment abilities. Most professional golfers will tell you that proper alignment is the most important aspect of putting, while at the same time the most difficult to perfect. A blade typically has a single line for alignment, while mallets have a myriad of advanced alignment designs. If you have low-handicap alignment skills, you may prefer a blade due to its other qualities. Secondly, consider the age-old truism “never up, never in!” Blade putters are lighter than mallets, and even good players may tend to go too light on the stroke because they are focused on the other essentials. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to find the right putter for your golf game. It’s simply by trial and error. But first, learn about the different putter styles and club heads. There are hundreds of variations of putters out there, but there are three basic types when it comes to putter length: the conventional, belly and long putters.

What putter length is best for you? The easiest answer is that it’s completely a matter of personal preference.

If you’re thinking of going away from a conventional putter to a belly or long putter, you simply need to get on a putting green and see which putter length feels best and produces the best results.

Each type does have qualities, however, that might narrow the choices. And we’ll take a look at those now:

Conventional Putter

Teaching pros are nearly unanimous: If you can use a conventional putter, then you should use a conventional putter. And a short one at that.

To achieve the ideal putting posture, take your stance and lean forward so that your eyes are directly over the line of the putt.

Let your arms hang loosely down, then bring your palms together. Voila – your ideal putting posture.

Obviously, you can’t take that posture unless your putter length is a conventional one.

So why do some pros (and more amateurs) go to the belly or long putters? Conventional putters require nerves of steel and an absolute minimum of wrist action. Poor putting nerves are often call the “yips”; those with excess wrist action are said to be “handsy.”

If you suffer from the yips or are too handsy in your putting, then trying a belly or long putter could be for you.

The Belly Putter

The belly putter provides a third point of contact – the abdomen (along with each hand) – between the putter and the player, which provides stability and balance to the stroke.

The main advantages of this putter length are that the putter is anchored against the body, and wrist action is easier to control, while the player remains in a posture that is close to the ideal.

However, since belly putters are longer and generally have a thicker grip, feel is reduced. Distance control is dicier as well due to the longer shaft.

The Long Putter

The long putter turns the putting stroke into a true pendulum swing, totally eliminating wrist hinge. Golfers take an upright stance, so those who suffer from weak or aching backs get a bit of a break.

But the long putter is even longer than the belly putter (it ain’t called the “long putter” – or “broomstick putter” – for nothing!), and that means even less feel and feedback. It also means that controlling distance becomes a bit more problematic.

But it does have the advantage of taking wrist action out of play. As Lamanna says, “This is usually the last hope for a bad putter. If this one does not cure the yips, you have to take up tennis!”

Blade putters are narrow and flat with the best feel for the ball. Low handicappers favor blades. Blades differ in where the shaft enters the head. The shaft is either at the heel or center, where it enters more in the middle of the blade. Tending to be face balance, blade putters will suit a player with a straight putting stroke. These putters are suited to hard, faster greens that require soft control, making them a good safe choice.

Mallets have a large rounded head. The deep design of the putter’s head allows for a lower and deeper centre of gravity that is far away from the face, reducing backspin on your putts. A lot of mallet putters have inserts on the face offering a soft hit from a large head. The weight is usually balanced throughout the club, providing golfers with a more consistent putting stroke.

Perimeter weighted putters are very forgiving because the weight is distributed around the edges. This putter provides for a larger sweet spot because the perimeter weighting stabilizes any slight mis-hits. These putters are great for beginning golfers or high handicappers.

Insert putters are designed with composite inserts made of a softer material. The advantage of using a light insert means the weight of the putter can be redistributed elsewhere on the putter face. Therefore the weight is added to the heel or and toe, offering a wider area for pure strikes. This wider area makes a larger sweet spot with more forgiveness. The inserts provide for a better feel on the putt and a smoother role, rather than a hop or skid. The only draw back is they do not produce sound. If sound is important feedback, this may not be the putter for you.

Offset places the actual putter blade back from the shaft slightly. This allows the golfers eyes to be more directly on top of the ball when standing over the putt. This will increase top spin for a truer roll.

Don’t forget that it’s also very important to choose the right length putter. If a putter is too short or long it can lead to bad posture, throwing off your view of the putting line. It is important to choose the right length for your body type.

Traditional length putters are the most common. They are approximately 33-36 inches in length. These putters use the golfer’s natural swinging motion of your arms, like a pendulum, giving the putt a true roll.

Belly putters are latest craze amongst players. They are approximately 41-46 inches in length. The end of the putter rests in on your belly button while you swing the club back and forth. Resting the club shaft on your belly button creates a third point of contact, stabilizing the stroke and anchoring the body. The wrist action is easier to control as the length of the putter changes the dynamic of the swinging motion. The main disadvantages are distance control and feel. The belly putter requires golfers to use more large muscles and fewer small muscles during the putting stroke. Additional practice is required to develop the feel for distance control.

Long or Broom Handle putters are the least popular length to use. They are approximately 48-52 inches and up in length. Golfers stabilize this putter by pressing its top against their chest or resting it on their chin. These putters require a completely different grip. Most players grip long putters with their left hand, holding the putter into their body (thumb up), and the right hand working as a claw in the middle section of the putter to pull and push through the line of the putt causing the putter to swing like a pendulum. Putting all the power of the stroke in the right hand. This is a tough skill to master and hard to use in the wind.

Now that you’ve got a feel for what putter’s are available to you and how they work, choosing the right putter will be easier. With about 50 percent of your shots being putts, it’s important to pick a putter that works for you. Great putting will always save par.

Your golf lesson is a valuable investment of your time, energy and hard earned money. Therefore, the first step towards getting the most out of your golf lesson is locating and working with the right instructor. The pro at the golf shop may not necessarily be the right coach for you. Ask your fellow golfers for recommendations on who they may have heard is a good instructor or who they have personally used for a golf lesson.

The next step is to find an instructor whose qualifications match your current level of play. In other words, you don’t need a highly qualified instructor to teach you the basics of golfing.

In addition, to gain the optimum benefits of your golf lesson, it is important that you are comfortable with your instructor’s personality and style of teaching. A good personality and teaching style should consist of encouragement, patience and the challenging of the student in a positive manner.

Finally, on choosing your instructor, make sure that the length of their availability matches the number of lessons you wish to take. There is nothing worse than going through this process, being comfortable with the instructor and then finding out that they are not available after the second or third lesson.

Preparation
