But first we need to set some baselines. It may not be out of the question for a golfer who normally shoots 100 to improve his/her game by 10 strokes and start averaging 90. Of course this would be a huge improvement, and any golfer who shoots these kinds of scores would probably be thrilled with improvement that is half that good.

It is another thing to take a golfer who averages 80 and have him shave off 10 stokes and start averaging 70. That is asking way too much, and we start to enter into the realm of being ridiculous. However, if that golfer were to shave 2-4 strokes off his score consistently, that would also be huge, and it might be doable.

So although the 10 stroke improvement goal is somewhat of a moving target, this series of articles will be geared for the player who shoots 100 and wants to shoot 90.
Why an improvement of 10 strokes, and not 5 strokes, for example? Well a double digit improvement would be huge if attainable, and the number is rather dramatic and has some shock impact, I think. After all, even if our fictional player were to improve by 5 strokes he would no doubt be thrilled. But the chance of improving by 10 strokes the score of a player who typically shoots 100 might be enough motivation to have him give it a try.

There is another caveat that is important. The player needs to be able to hit the ball a reasonable distance with a driver. In today’s world that would be about 250 yards for men, and about 210 yards or so for women. With today’s high tech drivers, this is really not that much distance. They don’t have to hit every shot that far (I’m sure they don’t if they are shooting 100 or more), but they should have the strength to do so. If players have the strength and ability to hit a ball that far, they can possibly reach almost all par 4’s they are likely to play in two shots. I’m assuming that players who can hit drives that far are hitting them off the fairway and into trouble a lot of the time, or oftentimes just don’t hit the ball solidly. If the reason a player is shooting 100 is that he or she is now an octogenarian and can no longer hit the ball very far, his chances of improvement are certainly lowered. He or she can, however, possibly make big improvements in the area of putting.

And putting is where we will start. We’ll begin with the Medicus putter training aid, which comes free, by the way, with the purchase of a Medicus driver. The main strategy here is to eliminate 3 putts. In particular we’ll use some fun practice games that have been dreamed up by the famous short game guru, Dave Pelz. These games will help golfers to putt the ball the proper distance. And, by the way, do you know what the proper distance to hit a putt is? Here’s the answer: 19 inches past the hole. Dave Pelz determined that more putts have a chance to go in the hole if they are struck with a force strong enough to make the ball go 19 inches past the hole. Like many things in life, saying you should hit a putt 19 inches past the hole and actually doing that are two different things. We’ll get into those details in the first article of the series.

After working and improving our putting by 5 strokes a round, we’ll go after the final 5 strokes using the Medicus dual hinge driver and the Medicus Power Maximus (Medicus Power Max), which is a weighted driver training aid. This means you will have to purchase two Medicus clubs. OK, they are a bit expensive, but if you could really improve your game by up to 10 strokes, most golfers would consider the price a bargain. And remember, the Medicus putter trainer comes free with a purchase of the Medicus driver. Not only that but you can test drive the Medicus driver for 30 days for only about 40 bucks, and there is an overall 60 day money back guarantee.

There is one caveat to all this: if you want to cut strokes off your golf score, you’re going to have to put in some effort! If it shocks you that I can’t offer some sort of a magic pill to take which instantaneously cuts 10 strokes off your game, then you might as well not read the rest of the articles in the series. You will have to work and you will have to practice. But there is no reason that practicing can’t be fun, especially using Medicus products.

Is it the pressure? For some it is. I think it is partly due to the fact that suddenly the player is asked to putt out all putts including the short ones. Below are some putting drills that will make sure you can make the short putts whether it is in the club championship or to win a big nassau bet in your regular foursome.

Perfect Alignment

This simple drill will give you a great visual aid during address that will assist your putting alignment. With proper alignment putter head will have a better chance to consistently hold its path better allowing the ball to start on the correct target line.
When you place your golf ball on the putting green prior to picking up your ball marker, align the brand name or some manufactures are now providing lines on the side of the golf ball so that it points down your target line. Now as you address the putt, use the line on the golf ball as a back up to what you see with your eyes. You should feel that the line on the golf ball is parallel with your eyes and target line.
As the golf ball rolls, note how the label or line is traveling in relation to the target line. If the golf ball is rolling end over end then you struck the putt on the correct line. However, if the golf ball begins to roll on the right or left side of the ball, the putter head path was heading in that direction instead of at the target. Holding your finish will also give you a clue to where your putter path was during your stroke.

Putt to a tee

Why would you do this? You know how some days the hole looks smaller than others. What would you do if the hole always looked bigger to you? You would be able to become to be more confident and to make more putts.

Find a flat spot on the practice putting green and simply stick a tee into the ground. Start hitting putts from two feet and move back one foot when you hit the tee three times in a row. You can make this a game with others and have fun while you are improving your putting!

You don’t usually associate technology and golf. The game just doesn’t seem to lend itself to the benefits of technology. Or, does it? A student attending a golf instruction session once showed me a range finder. You point it at the pin and it tells you how far away you are. Then there’s the launch monitor, which measures the angle at which a ball elevates when it’s struck by a club. And let’s not forget the GPS systems now available to buy, which can give you detailed information on a course. You just download the data.

Recently, a student brought another technology driven training aid to a golf lesson. This aid employers laser technology. The device is designed to help improve putting. She asked me what I thought of the device as a training aid. It wasn’t the first time I had seen or heard about it, but it started me thinking: How many laser-based devices are out there and can they really help cut your golf handicap?

Brief History of Lasers

The name LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Albert Einstein first theorized about the process that makes lasers possible in 1917. In the ’50s, Charles Townsend and Arthur Schawlow invented the maser (microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation), a technology similar to the laser. Then in 1960, Theodore Maiman invented the ruby laser, considered to be the first successful optical or light laser. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Lasers capitalize on the way light interacts with electrons. Electrons exist at specific energy levels or states characteristic of that particular atom or molecule. When you bump electrons to a higher energy level by injecting energy, “excess” energy is given off as light. The wavelength or color of the emitted light is precisely related to the amount of energy released. Depending on the particular lasing material being used, specific wavelengths of light are absorbed and specific wavelengths emitted.

LASERS and Golf

Lasers are ideal for a wide variety of uses, including eye surgery and metal cutting. While they have numerous properties, the one most associated with LASERS is accuracy. Applications requiring pinpoint accuracy are well suited to this technology. So it would be only natural that this technology when applied to golf could help with one’s putting, where accuracy is in high demand. That’s exactly what we found. Here are three examples:

* One device simply affixes to the putter shaft and beams a straight line directly in front of and behind the ball. It’s adjustable, which helps golfers see either a perfectly square set-up or a red beam along the target line. This device helps with alignment.

* A second device embeds a laser cartridge in the face of a putter. The device features a single beam that emits a red light from the face’s center for perfect alignment practice. The best part of the device is that the laser cartridge can be swapped out and you have a perfectly functional putter.

* A third device, which also attaches to a putter’s face, uses a three-laser Argon system that illuminates the ball and both sides of it. The device teaches proper alignment and fixes lopsided putting strokes. The device also comes with an Argon dome, which attaches to the putter, for enhanced practice.

We also found two other laser devices designed to help perfect your address and your swing:

* This device beams a laser light at the inside heal of your forward foot. By using the attached measuring tool, golfers can practice their ball and address positions with ease.

* Another device uses high-powered green lasers at opposite ends of a stick-like shaft to get the job done. The lasers are so strong that this device can be used effectively outdoors also comes with a wrist bar. It teaches the three P’s—plane, power, and precision.

These laser devices all seem like great training aids. As with any training aid, golfers must use them to get the most out of them. In other words, golfers must put in the required practice time with the aids—whether its driving, chipping, or putting—if the want to lower their golf handicaps.

Training aids are only helpful if you put practice with them, no matter how high- or low-tech they are. If you’re going to buy a training aid to help your game, make sure you use it between golf lessons and rounds of golf. It’s the only way these devices will help you slash your golf handicap.

Having a balanced putter leads to sound putting. If the putter itself can pass the simple spin and push test, a foundation for good putting can be made. If a putter is not balanced, it will torque at address and during the stroke; the putter will become a variable along with speed, slope of the breaks, greens condition, and length. Confidence in the putter will lead to a solid putting stance and more success.

Most putters will fail one or both of the simple check tests. The first is the spin test. With the grip pointing down, hold the putter just below the head between the palms. Spin the club. The more waggle it has the more unbalanced it is. The second test is the push test. Place the end of the grip on the floor and hold the club with one hand just below the head. With a finger of the free hand, push where the “sweet spot” is marked. If the head moves there is no real “sweet spot.” If the putter fails one or even both, how is the putt going to be accurate?

A proper length of the putter is also a major factor in putting. A proper stance will dictate the proper length of the putter. A solid stance will begin with having the eyes over the ball; this allows the seeing of the desired putting line. Feet should be about shoulder width. Players should place their hips over the heels; this will build the foundation. The arms should drop below the shoulders to allow for a natural pendulum motion. Now the player should grip the putter; this grip will be the proper length for the club. With the off-the-rack putters many players might be gripping the steel shaft. The length should be adjusted. This fitted putter will help dictate a solid stance time after time.

With a balanced and fitted putter, the player’s thoughts such as … the hole is up hill and goes right to left … if I shift into second gear quicker, I can improve gas mileage … the green is a little wet … I wonder if the guys at the office understand my report … can be addressed without the worry of the putter itself or even the stance being a problem.

The secret behind golf is to be comfortable and eliminate as many variables as possible.

This article will describe the Detour line of putters by Scotty Cameron.
The Scotty Cameron line of putters from Titleist is a very extensive line. The Scotty Cameron company merged with Titleist about 10 years ago and since then all the putters marketed by Titleist are designed by Cameron. All the brand names associated with Scotty Cameron putters are owned by Titleist. Cameron’s designs are esthetically pleasing, and some of his putters almost look like works of art or sculpture.
The Detour line of putters are rather remarkable looking instruments. The putter heads consist of a blade type putter face and an attached back body plate, perpendicular to the face, which has a long aiming line. Both the back body plate and the aiming line are curved. Cameron is convinced that an arced stroke is the proper stoke for putting rather than a stroke that attempts to be straight along the target line from back to finish. The arc of the putter would move inside the target line in the back stroke, the putter would come square to the target line at ball impact, and the arc would continue inside the target line after the ball is struck. This is sometimes referred to as an inside-neutral-inside putting stroke. Not all the experts agree that an arced stroke is the proper one for putting. The renowned short game guru, Dave Pelz, states in his book “Putt Like the Pros” that most golfers would be better off with a stroke that remains along the target line throughout, although he acknowledges that many golfers, including top pros, use the arced stroke method, often with considerable success. Belly putters have become popular in recent years, and it is obvious that one is forced to use an arced stoke with such a putter.
The arced back plate is made of an aircraft aluminum material. It has some holes in the bottom to take weight out of the middle of the plate, and a stainless steel weight is inserted in the back to place weight further back. The putter face is made of stainless steel and has a higher toe than heel. An addition weight is inserted into the toe of the putter head as well. The putter face also has a cushion material, called an Elastomer cushion, to give a softer feel at impact. All these weight redistribution techniques are used to increase the moment of inertia (MOI) of the putter and place the center of gravity (CG) of the club head in what Cameron considers the optimum positions. Increasing the MOI means that the club will be more forgiving on off center hits. The main and most obvious feature of the Detour line, however, is the curved back plate and curved aiming line which is truly a unique innovation.
There are a total of 4 putters that have the Detour technology. They include the Detour and Detour 2, and the difference in these two clubs is that the Detour has a one shaft offset, whereas the shaft of the Detour 2 is straight. The Detour technology has also been incorporated into one of the older and popular lines of Cameron putters called the Newport line. The Newport 2 and the Newport 2.5 Detour putters both sport the curved flange and its associated weight distribution system described above. All four Detour putters have a loft of 4 degrees and a standard lie angle of 71 degrees. The Detour 2 and the Newport 2.5 Detour are not available for left handers. There are some options for length and club head weight on most of the models.
The Detour putters by Scotty Cameron are remarkably creative innovations. Great attention is paid to esthetics and how the putter sits and looks to the golfer’s eye. IN addition the mix of materials used t produce the clubs take into account not only weight distribution and such technical issues as MOI and CG, but great effort is also placed into optimizing the feel and sound the putter makes at ball impact. It will be interesting to see how popular these ideas become in the future, especially the long curved aiming line. All four of the Detour putters have a retail price of $300, so they are expensive, premium clubs.

It’s been many months now of weekly practice our there on the golf course taking shot after shot. Unfortunately you still haven’t improved your handicap. Your short game is hopeless, driving inaccurate and you just can’t sink a putt to save your life. What do you do? You decide to take a golf lesson or two.

There are three main points that you need to take into consideration when it comes to choosing and getting the most out of your golf lessons. One, the choice of instructor, two coming prepared to the lesson and three, the expectations you must have of yourself after each lesson is finished.

Instructor

Your golf lesson is a valuable investment of your time, energy and hard earned money. Therefore, the first step towards getting the most out of your golf lesson is locating and working with the right instructor. The pro at the golf shop may not necessarily be the right coach for you. Ask your fellow golfers for recommendations on who they may have heard is a good instructor or who they have personally used for a golf lesson.

The next step is to find an instructor whose qualifications match your current level of play. In other words, you don’t need a highly qualified instructor to teach you the basics of golfing.

In addition, to gain the optimum benefits of your golf lesson, it is important that you are comfortable with your instructor’s personality and style of teaching. A good personality and teaching style should consist of encouragement, patience and the challenging of the student in a positive manner.

Finally, on choosing your instructor, make sure that the length of their availability matches the number of lessons you wish to take. There is nothing worse than going through this process, being comfortable with the instructor and then finding out that they are not available after the second or third lesson.

Preparation

It is highly important that you come to each one of your lessons with a series of questions prepared. Take note after each round of the things you need the most help with. Take a scrapbook and jot down after every misplaced shot what exactly you did with your swing and how you felt when you played the stroke.

It is extremely important that you practice everything you have been taught in between golf lesson sessions. This means that every time you go to a range or play out on a course you are constantly applying what you have been taught for every shot you make. Don’t just think that by going to a few lessons, you will automatically start to play better.

Finally, make sure that you are mentally prepared for the lesson to be given. Have all of your needed tools and equipment with you and remember that what we generally get out of something is in proportion to what we give.

Your Own Expectations

At the conclusion of each lesson you should have reached some sort of goal or expectation that you had of yourself. Whether this means you found the answers to every one of the questions you had for your instructor or maybe you hit further than you’ve ever hit before. Whatever it is, just make sure you know beforehand so you have something to strive for.

Constantly ask you instructor for feedback and make sure you tell him/her to be blunt with you right from the very beginning. Constructive criticism is very important if you want to see vast improvements in your game.

Also, expect assignments and practice techniques that can be implemented to correct certain aspects of your golf game. Follow through on these assignments and practice these techniques as often as possible knowing that it is in practice we improve the skill level.

A good client wrote to me saying that her problem is not so much thinking negative thoughts but ‘thinking at all!’ How many of you can relate to that? She went onto say that if any sort of thought enters her head, even positive thoughts, she then starts trying too hard. If she just swings and hits without thinking then she gets much better results. She believes the problem lies with a deeper lack of trust within herself to play the shot well. I thought this was a great way to lead into this week’s newsletter and I hope that this will help to put into perspective how I believe a lot of you feel on this subject. So what is trust? Simply put ‘trust’ means ‘confidence’. When you trust others it means that you have confidence in them; in their abilities and their integrity. If you do not trust someone it means you are suspicious of their motives, capabilities and their agenda! We all know when a relationship is built on trust and when one is not. Communication is easy and flows and this is also true when you trust yourself. Personal trust is all about having a good relationship with YOU! Your self-talk will be positive and motivating and above all else your actions will effortless. Your mood will be good and any task a breeze.I often talk about ‘playing in the zone’ a term you may have heard top athletes and golfers use; if you do not fully trust yourself to be capable of what you want to achieve, then it will be impossible to achieve this state.Self-trust is also about credibility; it is all about developing integrity, intent and a capability to create the results that make you believable to yourself and to others. It is about delivering that great shot time and time again and giving it your best. This is where your trust can take a battering. If you play a series of poorly executed shots your trust in your ability will begin to waver. To maintain a good sense of trust in you ability then you need to have the facts to support this.Well I have news for you – even the best in the world do not hit perfect shots each and every time they step up to the ball! This is a game called GOLF – frustrating, fun and above all else it is challenging. If Tiger or Laura Davies have a few bad shots (of course their bad shots and ours are likely to be quite different) then losing trust in their ability to play is only going to compound the rest of their game. It is the same for golfers at any level. If you go out and start a round of golf with the expectations that every swing and every putt has to be great and anything less will send you into a spiral of negative emotions and loss of confidence then maybe you should choose another hobby!Golf is all about how you handle the ‘not so good stuff’ – the good stuff is of course easy to handle. It only takes one or two bad moments to throw your self-talk and mood into a place where making a good golf shot will be almost impossible. This also needs to be put into perspective because if golf was really easy and every shot was great then where would be the challenge to come back and try again?Essentially, it all boils down to the question ‘Do I trust myself?’ When you step up to take a swing at that ball and you do not trust yourself to create the results you seek then your confidence will suffer and along with that so will the shot you take.Whatever decision you make with regards to how you play your golf shot make sure you make your intention to yourself clear and always act with integrity. By that I mean if you do not fully trust yourself and make that commitment to your golf club choice, direction and your capability to execute a strong and confident swing then you will simply lose trust in your ability to follow through. When this happens you will lose confidence in your ability. Thus a downward spiral can begin as you start to create your own reality based on a lack of trust in yourself. It will then be difficult to restore trust in yourself that will give you the confidence you need to play well. It is very similar to when someone else lets you down and you lose trust in that person. It is hard to feel the same way about them again. If you start to create this self-fulfilling prophecy as you step up to take that swing; a belief that you do not trust yourself to make a good shot will become a part of how you play your game of golf. Then when the result is a poor shot this can often be accompanied by self-talk such as ‘I am no good at this why do I bother’ etc. This in turn will affect your confidence and essentially take a lot of the enjoyment away from playing.I often hear from my clients that they are unable to focus on every shot and that they find it difficult to put previous bad shots behind them; ultimately what will then happen is all this pent up frustration will be taken out on the next shot. The trust in your ability has gone along with your confidence to play well. REMEMBER: The past does not define your future; unless you allow it! Losing trust in yourself which in turns affects your confidence is not a great plan when golf is ultimately a game of confidence! You are not giving yourself the best of starts to execute a natural and effortless swing if this is where your emotions and feelings are being guided! The good news is that whatever level your lack of self-trust happens to take on board at any given moment during your game; that as a human being you have a great propensity to restore trust not only in others but in yourself. Humans really do want to think and feel the best of others and of themselves. The key is in your ability to ‘forgive’. In the case of a poorly executed shot you can either berate yourself; which means losing trust in your ability and along with that the confidence needed to step up to the mark and take the next shot. This will also encourage you to buy into the belief that you are ‘no good’ which in turn will affect your trust and confidence.SO WHAT CAN YOU DO? You can look at every shot as a BRAND NEW OPPORTUNITY… A GIFT… and approach your swing with the knowledge that you have at some point in your golfing journey made (more than) a few really great swings and shots; so why not use EACH brand new opportunity as a new challenge to do your best? If for what ever reason your shot is not as good as you had hoped there’s always the next shot and the next BRAND NEW OPPORTUNITY! That is the game called golf J You have the power within you to be your own ‘best-friend’ – it is just up to you to use that ability to support yourself when you need it the most. Give it your best and if that means picking yourself up after and dusting yourself off afterwards and forgiving yourself – then DO IT. Remember it is just a game, a hobby, not a matter of life and death.MAKE EVERY SWING AND EVERY SHOT COUNT AND WATCH WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR SCORE CARD and your confidence! Above all else put it in perspective and ENJOY YOURSELF!

One of my ultimate goals in life is to improve my golf game. I understand that I will probably never be anywhere near as good as Tiger Woods, but I study his techniques just the same. In addition, I am also student of golf statistics and I try to use that data to improve my golf game. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it winds up being worthless trivia.Did you know that most of the best scratch golfers in the world miss an average of six greens in any one round? That’s one in 3, perhaps it’s just me, but those numbers don’t sound that great to me. But here’s the important part, they still get around a golf course in par or better. So how are they doing it?It’s terribly simple; all of them have great short games. The way they play their shots on, or just off the green are the real key to shooting great scores and lowering your crucial handicap. So, let’s get down to the basic question. What do I need to do to improve my golf game and get the ball in that hole in fewer shots? The short game is what I need to work on to improve my golf game. But clearly you won’t be good with a putter unless you practice at it. In most cases, the quality of your putting will be the determining factor in your scores. Most people will agree that it is easier to hit the ball a few feet into the hole than it is to judge a shot that is 100 yards away. If, like me you are saying to yourself, I’d like to improve my golf game , you need to focus on your short game. The old saying is “Drive for show – Putt for dough.” And if you study the game like I do, you realize that’s absolutely true. Now I really like to give the ball a good whack at the tee as much as the next guy, but you know as well as I do that it doesn’t always get the job done. The short game needn’t be tricky, it just requires a little practice and a little insider knowledge. I was able to improve my golf game in less than a week. Want to know how? I can hear all of you screaming right now. Wow! A structured full game improvement plan sounds serious! I do not have time for a golf lesson! Well the good is that you do and we are going to explain how to put a structured full game improvement plan or a series of golf lessons together with your golf instructor and what you should expect out of him or her.
You will first need to find a qualified golf instructor who gives golf lessons. This is not as easy as it may sound. It is kind of along the lines of finding an accountant or financial planner for your money. Ask better players how they learned the game and who they take golf lessons. Maybe you are lucky enough to live in an area where there are some nationally recognized teachers. Either way you will be able to come up with a group that you are interested in meeting.
In your meeting over the phone or in person, you need to find out how that person is qualified to teach golf lessons and who else have they taught. I would not be looking for them to run off a bunch of names that play on tour unless that is your goal. Instead, I would look for names of people that have a similar handicap as yourself and what their progress was.
Understanding that you are not taking golf lessons from them right then and there, you will still want to hear a generalization of their golf swing theory. This is very important. It is important because this will give you an idea of how the person communicates with you. If what he or she says sounds logical on top of creating an open communication with you, then even better. If the potential instructor only talks about working on the driving range and not improving the other areas of your game such as your short game and putting, choose another instructor. Period.
Another question to ask about golf lessons is if they will be using any training aids during their lessons. Many times training aids will help you get a feeling or a visual that is difficult to grasp. Training aids are made for all aspects of the game including the full swing, chipping, pitching and putting. Sometimes you are eligible for a discount on the various training aids because you are their student. It never hurts to ask!
The last thing that you will want to know in your initial conversation about golf lessons is how the golf lesson will be summarized or how will you be given your homework. This will vary from instructor to instructor. Some simply end the lesson while some others will email you the notes that they had about the lesson directly to you. This information should also include how many times you should practice before the next appointment.
I told you setting up a structured full game improvement plan would not be that difficult. Following the advice in this article will help you fin d the best instructor for you and in turn help you reach your golfing goals.

Ever catch yourself daydreaming about what it would be like to walk the links with your own personal caddy at a PGA golf tournament instead of watching all the action unfold on TV? Wondering if the right training and mentoring could someday help you channel your talent and passion for the sport into your own professional golf career?

While it might seem like a far fetched idea that would hardly turn into a reality, just remember all of the great golf legends. Take for example some of the true icons of the game like Lee Trevino, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods. These individuals learned the sport inside and out and have realized such huge success and amazing accomplishments throughout their professional golf careers.

It might be difficult to imagine these stars focusing on anything other than golf since incredible drives, chip shots, and putts seem to go hand in hand with the mere mention of their names. But here’s a rare look behind the scenes at where some of golf’s greatest players got their starts and where the game took them.

Perhaps with one of the most interesting stories, is Lee Trevino’s. One of golf’s first and finest players grew up with little money and began working at an early age to help his family make ends meet. He started working in cotton fields and found his love for golf shortly after as he began caddying at a local course. Before making a professional golf career for himself, Trevino also served four years with the U.S. Marines.

Starting out on the college track, crowd favorite Tiger Woods first attended Stanford University. He left school after a few years to focus on golf and turned pro in 1996 at the age of 21. Other college bound pros include Phil Mickelson who attended Arizona State University where he studied psychology. Tom Lehman who got his degree in business and accounting. Fred Couples went to the University of Houston.

Taking a look back at some other players also proves that golf was not always the sport these legendary names started out playing, but rather, the one they stuck with in the long run. For example, Davis Love III, a big name on the course today, had a real affection for ice hockey in his younger years. Fellow teammate Lee Janzen took up baseball as a kid and spent his summers participating on Little League teams. He also pursued tennis for a while before realizing golf was the sport he liked and played best.

Other sports enthusiasts include Ernie Els who took his hand at rugby, cricket and tennis before turning pro in 1989 and starting his professional golf career. Like Els, Vijay Singh also played cricket and rugby when he was younger and dabbled in soccer before settling on golf and turning pro in 1982.

With golf as their main focus, many pros can’t seem to get enough of the sport and have kept with it in other ways. Fred Couples has done work involving golf academies, equipment companies and clothing lines. Tom Weiskopf has helped design several courses across the nation and spent time as a golf analyst on TV.

So as you can see, not every professional golfer started out on the greens. Many pursued other educations, sports and hobbies and some even had to take it upon themselves to create their own opportunities. It just goes to show that with the right training, focus and determination, a professional golf career can be achieved if you’re up for the challenge.

It has long been accepted that the mind is what makes the key difference between success and failure in many areas of life and not least in sport, but still golfers who really want to achieve better results or win tournaments do not actively engage in preparing themselves as much mentally as they do physically.

Tiger Woods possibly did not know the importance of having a sports psychologist at the age of 12 but he does now. It is a little known fact that Jay Brunza, a sports psychologist, worked with Tiger from the age of 12.

Woods has often said that he doesn’t need to work on his mental game, but then will follow this up by saying that he doesn’t need to “because all the strategies have been in place from the age of 12!”

It is so important to develop your mental skills and clearly the earlier the better; although many golfers out there may not have been fortunate enough to take this on board at 12 years of age, believe me when I say that it is never too late.

If you think of the sports person you most admire, how would you describe them? Possibly focused, driven, motivated, dedicated, ambitious – all these skills are not to do with technique or talent but everything to do with attitude.

If you make the choice to learn to be more aware of creating a positive mindset, how these skills can be developed, and how your belief systems may not be serving you but you can change them, you stand every chance of not only creating the golf game you want to achieve but success in the life you want as well.

Much has been written about top sports performers’ ability to perform ‘in the zone’. It is in this ‘state’ where the best results are achieved most easily. You can liken the zone to that feeling of everything being so easy on every level; when you are operating without conscious thought and without effort. To give you an everyday example; remember what it was like when you were learning to drive a car? It was awkward trying to remember everything in the correct order, but after time you learnt to drive without any conscious thought for the process.

My definition of the ‘zone’ is that when we follow our path, the one that offers the least resistance, and when we begin to play the game we most naturally play, on and off the golf course, we begin to excel. We will find that we are having fun because it is ‘effortless’, we are in the flow because we are doing what we ‘love’ to do.

I do many talks, and I have coached numerous golfers on a one to one basis, and time and time again the same thing has happened: the enjoyment has gone out of their game of golf. I often feel that people are describing a trip to the dentist not an enjoyable day playing their favourite sport!

Before I finish this week’s newsletter I just want to make one final point that I want to share with you that if you are prepared to take FULL RESPONSIBILITY to change that which is not working for you and to commit to doing more fully that which does then you will be able to make the changes to your game of golf that you want to achieve!

My online programmes and my soon to be launched E-Course will help you to work more fully on the mind side of your game of golf.

****************

TIP: To keep a check on your self-talk start your sentences with ‘I am going to…’ This will encourage your subconscious to believe that what follows is going to happen. For instance; ‘I am going to hit this shot onto the green…’ ‘I am going to get this putt into the hole’, ‘I am going to really enjoy today’s game of golf’ etc.

When watching golf on television, one cannot help but wonder how men and women can make millions of dollars playing a game that looks so simple. Honestly, who can’t hit a ball into a hole with 4 or 5 tries? Ahh, but golf is another one of those “finer arts”, and it can take years and years of practice before you break par – let alone try for those birdie thingies! For people looking to get into the sport, golf lessons are probably the best way to go – unless you were raised on the greens like dear Tiger.

So, is there any real difference between instructors, or will anyone do?

Hey look, there are $7 an hour fry cooks at McDonald’s and $100,000 per year chefs – both can teach you how to cook, but the results you’ll experience will be far different. While a higher price does not always mean higher quality, it is a good rule of thumb to go by when looking for the “Zen Master” instructor for your golf lessons.

How do I choose an instructor?

As with almost any decision we make, the budget is always a factor. How much money can you afford? Are these golf lessons to help you meet clients, or are you just looking to learn how to play the game? If you really don’t like golf but know it would be a great business asset, then you will want a better instructor. After all, the golf lessons then become a business investment, correct? You will generally find the more experienced and sought-after instructors giving golf lessons at the higher end clubs and resorts. A Las Vegas golf lesson at the Walter’s Golf Academy might be given by Chuck Matlack, Mike Davis, or Jimmie Pollard – all of whom are seasoned pro’s with great portfolios – and with great rates to match!

Do I have to have private golf lessons, or are there other options?

Now that is a very good question. You can either receive golf lessons from an instructor in a one-on-one setting, or attend a “Golf School” where lessons are given in groups. Clearly, you will get more personalized golf lessons with a personal instructor, but the process can take months, and progress may be slow. But if you want to save some money and need a crash course, then golf lessons from one of the many available schools is the route to take.

What else should I know?

You should definitely know your own commitment level. Look – golf lessons are not cheap. Whatever you learn – be it from Jimmie Pollard during a Las Vegas golf lesson or at Greg’s Golf Shack – you will need to reinforce what you learn with practice. Otherwise, you are just wasting your money. So be sure that you really want to play the game, be it for business or pleasure, before deciding to take golf lessons.

As with anything else, you’ll want your golf instructor or school to be the best investment of both time and money possible. Therefore, don’t be afraid to ask for references, or even to interview the potential instructors before making a decision. After factoring in budget, instruction style, and your own commitment level, select the best golf lessons option for you and your needs. You’ll be glad you did.

The following paragraphs summarize the work of golf lessons experts who are completely familiar with all the aspects of golf lessons. Heed their advice to avoid any golf lessons surprises.

Those of you not familiar with the latest on golf lessons now have at least a basic understanding. But there’s more to come.

If you’ve been thinking about taking up golf, or if you’re a golfer in search of a better game, you may have considered golf lessons. But are golf lessons really beneficial? And how do you find a pro who will offer good advice?

There are some who swear that lessons are vital and others who say that practice is the only thing that will improve your golf game. The truth seems to lie somewhere in the middle. But before you drop your coach or sign up for lessons, consider what it is that you hope golf lessons will accomplish. Outlining your goals may help you decide whether you truly need lessons or simply more time on the course.

If you play with others who play exceptionally well, you may want to find someone to give you some help with your game. Whether that’s a paid coach or merely a friend who plays well is strictly a personal choice. Getting some pointers and tips may be a good way to ensure that you don’t totally embarrass yourself in front of other players.

If you’re serious about the game, you’ve probably been involved long enough that you don’t need advice on whether to get a coach. But if you’ve only recently discovered the joy of golfing, you may find yourself looking for a way to improve your game. Golf lessons could very well be the answer.

Some people say that lessons give them a set time to practice and an opportunity to completely focus on the game. You’ll typically be less interrupted than if you were playing on your own, stopping to chat with friends along the way. But others say the simple fact of having someone scrutinizing every move and offering constant advice is more distracting than helpful. Decide whether you’re one of those who accept direction and works well in that situation. That’s a major clue as to whether golf lessons are a good idea.

Remember that a golf coach’s job is to teach you to golf correctly. That means that there are some habits that he (or she) will be trying to ingrain and others they’ll be trying to break. While golfing correctly is a terrific goal, many golfers have some bad habits that they tout as benefiting their game. Changing your grip, adjusting your stance or even using different equipment may be among the “must do” list from your coach. You may resist those changes. You have two options. You can do your best to follow the instructions, or you can explain that you aren’t planning to change that particular habit. If you don’t plan to change, you may need to reexamine your decision to take lessons. Without following directions, lessons may become a waste of time and effort on both parts, and money on yours.

Golf lessons are great for some people. It’s a personal decision whether you are one of those who will benefit from a coach – formal or informal. But remember that the most important thing to improve your golf game is simply practice.

As your knowledge about golf lessons continues to grow, you will begin to see how golf lessons fits into the overall scheme of things. Knowing how something relates to the rest of the world is important too.

There are many different ways to achieve golf lessons, and many ways to effectively acquire valuable lessons out there. Among the many ways to learn lessons of golf, online golf lessons are one of the fast effective ways to gain knowledge of strategies and techniques. Improving your golf game while realizing your best potential is one great reason to utilize online golf lessons.

Finding the best website for online golf lessons is relatively simple. Perhaps you have already established a comfortable, user-friendly golf website and that site lends you access to online golf lessons. If not, there are many reputable websites from which to choose. Also there are varied means in which to utilize the lessons offered.

Online golf lessons can include tips on how to improve specific aspects of your golf game. Normally on most websites, an overall generalization is provided so that you can see the broad scope of golf. This occurs at first and as you gain more direct knowledge toward where your particular golf game suffers you can find information that will seem personalized.

There will also be valuable information about stance, follow through of an effective swing and the finer points of swing analysis. Online golf lessons can even include time and effort geared toward the mental aspect of the game. As we know golf is a competitive sport in which you are competing against other golfer, the course and most importantly yourself.

In most case online golf lessons are offered on a non-paying basis and are simply included in your favorite golf website. In some cases you may find golf lessons that are presented in acrobat reader formatting and are downloaded into your personal computer at a minimal cost to you. Payment is made in a secure fashion with a credit card. Shopping around to search for the most effective lessons for your level of interest in the sport of golf is of utmost importance.

There’s no perfect rhythm for golf. You can play at a fast pace or you can play it at a slower pace—and still play it well. How quickly or slowly you play doesn’t necessarily matter as far as your golf handicap is concerned. Unless, of course, you’re playing at breakneck speed or you play at an absolute crawl. Then, mistakes can happen. Otherwise, you can play quickly or slowly and still do well. In fact, you’ll probably find as many players with low golf handicap who play the game slowly as you do who play the game quickly.

What matters, as I’ve said before in my golf tips, is playing the game at your natural rhythm. Rest assured, everyone has his or her own natural rhythm. If you like to take your time with things, you probably like to play at a moderate pace. If you like to zip through things, you probably like to play at a faster pace. The key is not to let what’s happening on the course affect your natural rhythm. When that happens, you often lose both your rhythm and your timing. To trash scoring barriers, you should try to maintain your natural rhythm through the whole round

Find Your Rhythm Early

To squeeze the most out of your game on any given day, work on getting into a nice rhythm early. If you use a pre-round routine and stick with it throughout the season, it makes getting into a rhythm easier. Of course, following a pre-round routine every time is difficult. Players taking golf lessons often say they don’t have the time to go through a pre-round routine. But if you’re serious about lowering your golf handicap, you’ll make time for it. A pre-round routine prepares you mentally and physically for the challenges ahead.

In addition, a pre-round routine eliminates the nervousness or strangeness you sometimes feel before a round. It’s why the pros work hard to gain their rhythm before they tee off. It’s even more important for weekend golfers to work on their rhythm because they don’t play as often as the pros. Tiger Woods copied his pre-round routine from Jack Nicklaus. Tiger uses the same six clubs on the practice range, ending with the club he is going to use off the first tee. Tiger’s not working on his swing here. He’s working on his rhythm.

Play When Ready

In addition to a pre-round routine, always use a pre-shot routine. A good pre-shot routine is critical to playing with consistency. The tendency when your playing a match is to speed up mentally, especially when you’re under pressure. This tendency breaks your rhythm, throwing you off. It also creates tightness in your hands and arms. When you’re tight, it’s harder to fell your rhythm. You start making mistakes. A good pre-shot routine relaxes you, calms you down, and encourages rhythm. Never play a shot before you’re ready.

In addition, always walk to your next shot at a steady pace. Do the same between holes. The extra time gives you a chance to plan your next shot. And don’t get too pumped up after a good shot. Or, too down after a bad shot. Either can affect the next shot. Pace yourself and always try to play within yourself. Your natural rhythm will do the rest for you.

Use A Metronome For Putting

Another critical area is putting. It’s just as important to build rhythm for putting prior to a round as it is for making a full swing. Actually, it might be more important, since nearly 30 percent of your shots on any given day are putts. So in addition to taking swings at the practice range, hit the putting green. One way to build rhythm in your putting is to practice with a metronome—a device for keeping beats in music. Use this device to practice your putting stroke.

If you really want to refine your game, here’s a solid golf tip: Play at your natural rhythm. It improves your scores and your golf handicap.

Everyone thinks of Tiger when playing golf “in the zone” comes up for discussion. But everyone has experienced a few holes, if not a round of golf, where they could relate to this feeling. It is as if you cannot put a foot wrong, everything just seems to come together perfectly.

If anyone wanted to know what it feels like to play golf “in the zone” on the last day of a tournament David Duval would be able to describe it. When he shot 59 in the last round of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic a few years back, every commentator found themselves making comments about Duval’s “mesmerizing performance” and his “absolute focus” and lack of emotion, throughout the day.

When you play golf in the zone, the background chatter of your mind quietens and complete focus is given to the task at hand, one shot at a time throughout the round, whilst at the same time believing that you can do it. This altered state of awareness was clear to see by anyone who watched Duval during that round at La Quinta. It was a truly mesmerizing performance.

I always listen to the commentary with great interest, paying attention to the actual words used. Take the description “mesmerizing performance”. The verb “to mesmerize” derives from Anton Mesmer, whose ideas were the forerunner to the development of hypnosis. And this is what the zone state is – hypnosis.

Duval’s iron play was so accurate that he was nearly always attempting a relatively short putt. He appeared to be expressionless as he played, always wearing wraparound sunglasses, totally focused on the ball and the pin. His focus and belief didn’t waver all day, and he just kept on hitting one after another perfect shot. The key in this situation is to allow that to buoy you up as opposed to allowing other thoughts to creep in…like “it must stop soon”, or “when’s it going to end?” He didn’t allow these thoughts to enter his mind. He was in a state of tunnel vision and focused awareness, and this state, whether you call it hypnosis or being in the zone, acts like a set of blinkers, shutting out any other thoughts.

It was only at the very end, after he’d sunk that eagle putt, that Duval’s state changed and he showed some emotion. Until then he played like a robot. He really was golfing in the zone.

Other commentators on the Duval 59 made descriptions such as “locked in on the ball”. This was a great description – he truly was locked in on the ball, his focus was clear and absolute. When you are playing golf in the zone you actually have a greater sense of awareness than otherwise, but this awareness is very selective. This heightened focus and awareness, this increased clarity, is directed upon the task in hand. Everything else just fades into the background.

A lot of people are scared of hypnosis, but this is because they do not understand what it actually is. Hypnosis could be described as a state of relaxation, at one with a state of heightened awareness, induced by suggestion. When you are playing golf in the zone you are superbly aware, you have a heightened sense of everything that is important, whilst at the same time remaining nicely calm and relaxed. And this was clearly what Duval experienced during that final, 13 under, round. He didn’t show any emotion during the round, didn’t pump his fist or do anything except move calmly on to his next shot, until after he had sunk his eagle putt to win on the 18th. He didn’t allow anything to break his focus.

If you would like to have similar mental strength you will find that hypnosis downloads or golf hypnosis cds are of great assistance.

There were some amazing golf and putting psychology lessons on show with Phil Mickelson’s stunning win at the Tour Championship at East Lake this weekend. Yes I know Tiger won the FedEx Cup and the $10 million with an amazingly consistent series of results. But given Phil’s year, both on and especially off the course, his victory on Sunday was a simply joyous and breathtaking turnaround. Phil had looked out of sorts in recent weeks and after his quadruple bogey 8 on the 14th hole in the first round, I had sadly anticipated him failing again over the weekend.

You’ve probably heard about Phil’s putting woes and his comments about how “I’ve hit the ball so well and yet my scores haven’t reflected that.” You’ve probably also heard about how “Bones” Mackay, Phil’s longstanding caddie, urged him to get help the week before the Tour Championship from Dave Stockton, one of the best putters in golf and twice a major winner. As if those weren’t sufficient reasons, Stockton also putts a bit like Phil does when he’s at his best.

So what major flaws did Dave Stockton notice in Phil’s putting stroke and what major changes did he prescribe? You’d expect them to be fairly severe given Phil’s recent comments about the inconsistent putting that has plagued him off and on over the last two years. He’s also talked about how his poor putting has detracted from the progress Butch Harman’s been making with his swing over the same period.

Well, Phil described the change in an interview as a “minor tweak” and went on to say “No, it’s very minor. It’s very minor. But [my] hands are back ahead like I used to putt, and the ball is just rolling much better.” In another interview, he talked about Dave Stockton’s comments just “reaffirming the way I’ve putted since I was a kid.”

So what golf psychology lessons can we learn from that then, Andrew, I hear you say? Well first of all, it confirms that if you’ve hit a particular shot well in the past, then you already unconsciously know how to hit it that well again – without changing your technique. All you need to do is to vividly recall one of those earlier successful shots and allow your unconscious golf mind to get on with the job as you get back into your comfort zone. I’d certainly include this type of visualisation in your pre-shot routine.

All that probably happened to Phil was he missed a few putts, lost his confidence and started to fear putting rather than enjoying the challenge. When that happens with any part of our golf game, we stop enjoying ourselves as much as we did and we start consciously analysing things. It doesn’t take too long before we start thinking there’s something drastically wrong with our swing or putting stroke and we start changing things, even though we seemed to have a perfectly effective method before.

This doesn’t just happen over a long period of time. For many of us it can happen in the middle of a round. Have you ever had the experience of playing a series of shots quite well and then hitting a bad shot, maybe a big slice? Did you badly pull or hook the next shot? If you did, you probably consciously thought you needed to make a swing correction, despite already knowing how to hit the ball quite well unconsciously. Well, you did say that you’d hit a series shots quite well, didn’t you.

Another golf psychology lesson was written on Phil Mickelson’s face all day on Sunday, not just when he won. He was clearly enjoying himself immensely, even before he started scoring well. After the round, he commented that, “Today was a lot of fun” and that’s not the way he’s been talking in recent weeks. Isn’t it odd how golfers seem to play so much better when they’re enjoying themselves, even if some, like a certain future Ryder Cup captain, have a hard time convincing us of that fact.

Imagine the next time you join a discussion about how to shop for golf lessons. When you start sharing the fascinating golf lessons facts below, your friends will be absolutely amazed.

Before, it has been acclaimed as a game for those who can afford to buy the equipment needed. But as time goes by, golf has gradually gained mass recognition, as it becomes an affordable sport.

However, golf lessons remain to be very expensive. That’s why it is important to take into considerations the different factors that need to be mulled over before obtaining golf lessons.

Therefore, for those who would like to know how to shop for golf lessons in the market, here is a list of some tips that can be used:

1. Budget

Before a Tiger Wood wannabe enrolls into some golf lessons, he or she must first learn how to stick to the budget.

Golf lessons’ prices may vary and there are instances where other institutions price their golf lessons really high. So it’s better for a beginner to conform to his budget so that he will not be compelled to take the best and the most expensive golf lessons.

2. Know the preferences

It is important to consider one’s preference for golf lessons. For example, if an individual is very particular with the instructors, then, he or she should be prepared to prepare a bigger budget for it because skilled instructors usually offer expensive golf lessons.

3. Consider one’s goals and dedication to learn the game

You may not consider everything you just read to be crucial information about golf lessons. But don’t be surprised if you find yourself recalling and using this very information in the next few days.

Expensive golf lessons can really do amazement with one’s performance in the game. However, these things will only be put to waste if the concerned individual is not dedicated to do the lessons.

The important thing in golf lessons is to have one’s goals and dedication meet at a certain point.

4. Types of golf lessons

Golf lessons can either be private or those that are taught in golf schools. Both are advantageous to a golf wannabe. The only difference they make is with the length of time required to finish the lessons.

Private golf lessons entail a longer period than golf lessons taught in schools.

5. Shop around

Not all golf lesson providers are created equal. Hence, it is important for a person who wants to learn golf lessons to shop around first so that he will be able to compare one item from another.

Indeed, golf lessons can be very expensive. That’s why it is important to consider these factors so as to avoid any additional expenses.

Nevertheless, golf lessons can definitely help a person harness his or her skills when playing golf.

So now you know a little bit about how to shop for golf lessons. Even if you don’t know everything, you’ve done something worthwhile: you’ve expanded your knowledge.

What can you get out of a golf academy short game instruction? Well, let me first say that we all know the frustration of missing those simple 1 foot putts, but if you can get your short game as short as possible you can then go back and practice those putts at home or in the office. So, take your mind off of those missed putts and focus on your short game for a moment.

Just like any sport, practice will really improve your short game. You know, practice not only involves the physical, but the mental part, which should be practiced also. The mental part of the game is in many ways just as important as the physical and many golf academies around the world will indicate this.

Here’s basically what you’ll get when attending a golf academy short game instruction session. Keep in mind that every academy will teach the basics of the short game and some will be more detailed than others. But generally, you’ll discover most golf academy short game instruction will reveal the following items to commit to memory:

90 percent of the game is mental. Yes, it’s all in your head (so to speak). If the mind is focused, prepared and in gear to make the shots, then the body will follow. It’s been said the Tiger Woods dad taught him to visualize in his head where the ball needs to go before he made a swing or putt. It’s true and it works for me.

70 percent of shots are made within 120 yards of the hole. If you look at it this way, then a 365 yard hole should not be as intimidating since you really only need to master the 120 yards where the 70 percent of your shots will be made. To some, this is more of a mental part of the game that you should master as opposed to the physical. Although, both are equally important.

Chose the right club that matches your distance and height. With that in mind, you want the ball out of the air as much as possible. In order to keep the ball low, shift approximately 75 percent of your weight to the balls of your feet. If you have to take a higher shot, adjust your chest further back with only 60 percent of your weight forward.

Learn to chip with less force. Many golfers tend to overpower the chipping which lead to more frustration. Thinking more about the sweetspot when you chip will create better results then focusing on the force behind the swing. Remember to also keep your impact with the ball on the backside of the ball to keep it from going into the clouds (too much air).

When using a 7 or 8 iron, try gripping closer down towards the bottom of the grip. Some golf academy short game instructors would say to use a putting stroke, with the open stance, slightly aligned with the target line, when using the 7 or 8 iron. When you pull the club back, it should be about 18 inches. Always accelerate smoothly. On the downswing don’t uncock your wrists too early.

Have you heard of the “flamingo drill”? Basically, it goes like this: 1) hit some chips and pitches with the toe of your rear foot balanced on your front foot. This will place your weight on your front leg. 2) place your foot down to the normal position and hit a few more. At this point you should notice how the exercise helps to prevent hanging back and giving the ball too much flight. With this drill you should also make note that if your head is behind the ball, your weight will also be behind the ball (which you don’t want). 3) try to keep your weight on the front to prevent fat chips.

Well, there you have some of the basics of a golf academy short game instruction. One last thing, let’s remember to enjoy the game in the middle of trying so hard to get the short game perfected.

Hitting a bad drive or a poor approach shot or missing a short putt can get to golfers sometimes, even those with low golf handicaps. Occasionally, golfers take their frustrations out on a club. Putters for whatever reason seem to bear the brunt of golfer frustration. Most players taking golf lessons from me know of someone who’s thrown his putter in the water or otherwise damaged it during the course of play.

It’s not just weekend golfers who wreak havoc on their putters, either. Professionals do it, too. Woody Austin, winner of the 2004 Buick Championship, got so frustrated with his game once that he bent the shaft of his putter on his head after missing a crucial putt. He’s not the only pro who’s done it, either. That raises the question: What do you do when you don’t have a putter to putt with?

The Rule

The rule on clubs is straightforward. If a club is damaged during the course of play, you can replace it. For example, if something happens to a club during the course of normal play—the clubhead falls off, the shaft gets bent while hitting—you can replace the club. Tiger Woods sent a PGA official to the trunk of his Buick during the 2004 Deutsche Bank Tournament to get him another sand wedge after damaging his on some rocks while swinging.

However, if you damage your club through some action other than during the normal course of play, like smashing it on a rock or bending it over your knee, you’re stuck. You can’t replace it. You have to discontinue using it and play without a replacement. In other words, if you intentionally damage your putter, you have to pay the price. Now the question becomes: what do you putt with to finish the round?

You have several options when it comes to using another club. Let’s look at three of them:

A Wedge

One option is a wedge. The advantage to using a wedge is that the shaft lengths of a putter and a wedge are similar. The length allows you to not only take your normal putting stance, but also set up with your eyes directly over the ball. Setting up with your eyes directly over the ball, as I’ve mentioned in my golf tips, is essential to good putting.

The disadvantage with using a wedge is that your have to strike the middle of the ball with the thin leading edge of the blade. That’s not easy. It takes a great deal of precision and confidence to hit a golf ball with the leading edge of a club. It may not be something you want to try if you’re already angry or upset over your play. It might just make things worse instead of better, costing your strokes.

A Driver

Some players with low golf handicaps use a driver. The advantage of using a driver to putt with is that it is second only to the putter when it comes to having the least amount of loft. A driver has a face loft of 5 to 10.5 degrees, while the putter has a loft of about 1 degree. The large face also makes it easier to make good contact with the ball.

The driver’s disadvantage is the length of its shaft. It’s hard setting up directly over the ball with a club that has such a long shaft. To get comfortable, you’ll need to stand farther away from the ball. Your eyes won’t be directly over the ball. Also, the ball tends to pop of the driver’s face because of the mass of the clubface.

Using A Hybrid

A third option is a hybrid. It doesn’t quite have the driver’s low degree of loft, but the shaft is a much shorter. That enables you to get a little closer to the target line with your eyes. But the ball pops off a hybrid’s clubface just like it does with the driver. So you need to be careful when using this club. Some players use a hybrid to hit shots just off the green. Why not try it as a putter, if your putter becomes incapacitated?

Any of these three clubs can work. You might want to spend some time practicing with them though. That way you’ll at least have some feel for the clubs as a putter should you ever need to use them. However, if you’re really serious about lowering your golf handicap, you’ll work on keeping your frustrations in check and saving your putter. It’s the best way to improve.

Jack Nicklaus once said the one constant in a good golf swing is a steady head, and that’s true across the spectrum of golf shots, from the full swing to the shortest putt.

So what is going to happen when your head moves? For a right-handed golfer, the tendency is to move left toward the target. Even a movement left of just a few inches can ruin the shot.
You remember that kids song? It went the leg bone is connected to the ankle bone, and so on. As a golfer, if you move your head the spine is going to move with it. This is going to change the direction the club head returns to the ball.

What happens when this move occurs is a bunch of bad or poor shots. Some shots could be topped shots, sliced or hooked shots, you could even pull the ball or just even smother it. What is happening that causes this is called the outside in swing or the “over the top” swing.

Sometimes people who watch this move in the golf swing will say that you are lunging at the golf ball.

In the short game, this move will be less magnified, but you are still going to hit poor shots. Not the one that you intended to hit. When you swing that outside to in golf swing when you are pitching or chipping, you are going to most likely going to blade the ball. What happens with the outside to in golf swing most times is that you have a tendency to hit the ball right in the middle (above the equator or in the belly of the ball). This is all caused by that head moving just a little.

There are so many different things or shots that could happen when the head is moving. Some are, those little shanks or hosel rockets to the right or even a skulled or line drive shot.
This poor swing path of the outside to in can also effect your putting. Maybe you’ve stroked a putt and as soon as it’s on its way you know you yanked it left. There is nothing worse than knowing you missed the putt before the ball is even half way to the hole. That is another point about moving your head. Usually when you move your head or even look up when moving your head, all you end up doing is watching a bad shot. It is not what you usually want to see.

Moving the head and changing the spine angle is the cause of most pulled putts and not loose hands or getting wristy as most people think.

Take a look at Tiger Woods. Tiger is a machine. His head never moves. It does not matter if he is killing a tee shot or draining a 5 footer. When he is putting a 10 footer, his head does not move until the ball is almost in the hole. Want a good shot, keep the head still, this is what Jack said and he is right.

Golf instructors often talk about the transition in the golf swing as that pause between completing the backswing and starting the downswing. They often suggest that slowing down the transition is one of the most important keys to hitting a good shot.

Well, I’m not qualified to comment on the technicalities of the golf swing. However, I am qualified to comment on what for me is an even more important transition in golf psychology. It’s the transition from the conscious analytical planning phase of your pre-shot routine to the unconscious instinctive phase of actually hitting the ball. Unlike the pause at the top of the backswing, the faster you can comfortably make this transition, the better and more consistently you’ll find yourself striking the ball or rolling the putt.

If you watch the top players in the world, like Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, you’ll notice that they take very little time between taking their chosen club out of the bag and hitting the ball. A recent study suggested that Tiger and Phil consistently take around 11 to 12 seconds to do this and they are very consistent with the timing. If they took any longer, they often hit a less than good shot – these guys don’t hit many downright bad shots.

So what do they do in those 11 to 12 seconds? Well, every player has his own idiosyncrasies, including re-gripping, waggling, breathing, blinking and countless other rituals. However, they all seem to

What’s interesting is that they don’t seem at all rushed in fitting all that into such an apparently short time. They certainly don’t have any spare time for self doubt and that little voice in their head telling them they’re doing it all wrong! In fact, they complete the process like they’re in some sort of trance and that means that they are leaving the whole process to their unconscious golf mind, just like driving a car or riding a bike.

Now some of the players you watch on TV or out on the course take a lot longer to make this transition and the time they take is less consistent. How well did you see them play? If you watched Sergio Garcia playing golf a few years ago, you’d have often seen him take an inordinately long time to hit the ball. He had a pained expression on his face that suggested he was experiencing a lot of negative self-talk and he seemed to be wringing the life out of the club as he repeatedly re-gripped his hands. It’s no surprise that his golf was inconsistent at best and he certainly didn’t seem to be enjoying his golf.

So how do I speed up my transition from taking my club out to hitting the ball, I hear you say. Well one way is to make the whole process an instinctive or unconscious activity. Streamline your own transition process and use it every time you hit a shot on the golf course, at the driving range, on the practice putting green and in your mental golf practice. You do practice and play golf in your mind, now don’t you?

Master the Mundane. Say What?!! I’ll probably lose most of you at this point because the “big secret” is so boring that it couldn’t possibly take you from an 88 to a 75 golfer. Run for cover if you must, because after you read this article, the truth of it will dog you every time you are walking to the next tee box for the rest of your golf life (or until you accept it and act on it). I am assuming of course that you have at least a little “game” already. If you are just starting out in golf, most of this won’t make much sense to you until you get good enough to have a “bad day” on the course. If you want to reach the next level of scoring, read on — You have been warned!Mastering the mundane is fundamental to success in any sport. In basketball, it’s the layup, baseball the bunt, football block, tackle and catch. In golf, it is the dreaded “Three Foot Putt”. You know the one. When you bury it to take a high dollar double press, it was a “5-footer”, but when you miss it, you would have won if it hadn’t been for that “16-incher” you missed on 18. Don’t panic! This is not a “How to make short putts” article. The focus of this piece is on the benefits of making the 3-footer every time. This one skill is so critical to your game that nothing else seems to matter until this piece is in place. I am the “A” player on our foursome and we are the reigning Base Champions (and there is some pretty stiff competition). I only mention this to make this point — I’m not very good. Our “C” and “D” players are both better golfers than I am. So why do I play “A”? Because I make 3-footers…always. During the latter stages of the playoffs (when the pressure mounts), we get to watch players with games that far out-class mine, fall to pieces because they have zero confidence in their short putting.

What I am talking about is developing a habit of making short putts. When you go to a Major Golf Tournament, what do you see Tiger and Phil etal. do when they first come out? They practice short putts. Why? Because they are easy, it calms the nerves, and putts are what is going to win the tournament when all is said and done. There are myriad techniques for making 3-footers. Some of the best are:1. Pick a spot 8 – 10 inches in front of the ball and putt over it (hear it go in – never look up!).

2. Visualize putting to a dime instead of the hole. Say you have a right-to-left breaker; imagine a dime sitting on the front right edge of the hole and try to hit it.

3. (My personal favorite) Visualize an eight inch tube in front of your ball that you need to accelerate the ball through on its way to the bottom of the cup.

It really doesn’t matter what your technique is. What matters is your mindset when you stand over the putt. You must develop the ability to eliminate all else from your mind except negotiating the golf ball those few feet to the bottom of the cup. It is a prerequisite that you have the ability to make these putts with regularity. Devote the (BORING) time on the putting green knocking down 3-footers until you can make 30, 40, or 50 in a row. You need to have this muscle memory in place for the rest of the strategy to work. Once this is accomplished, the real magic can begin.

Keep a putter in your office and/or at home. It doesn’t have to be your “Billie Barue”. Any old cheapie will do, because what you are attempting to achieve is 100% mental. Don’t stand there and bang away at it for hours. That won’t do you any good. Your goal is to be able to stop what you are doing, and achieve 100% intense focus on your putting routine; under any circumstances, under any conditions, and at any given time. When things are hectic at work, pick up the putter, take a deep breath, and sink a 3-footer. If the kids are making you nuts or the telemarketers ruining your evening, pick up the putter, take a deep breath, and sink a 3-footer. YOU ONLY GET ONE CHANCE. NO DO OVERS! If you miss it, take a second to consider why. Chances are you didn’t clear your mind and focus on the task at hand. It is the act of stopping to figure out why you lost focus and missed the putt that will revolutionize your short game.

Pretty soon you will develop a habit of “immediate focus”. (I’m sure somebody else said that already but I like to tell myself I made it up). The putter and the entire process of relaxing, focusing, and draining that putt will become like a security blanket to you. What strikes fear into the hearts of your opponent on the course, will become your safety valve (your “happy place” according to Chubbs). No matter how badly things are going with your swing or short irons, that 3-footer will be like coming home to relax after a hard days work. Imagine never having to be “iced” by your opponent sinking a 12-footer (when you need to make a short one to tie). How many golfers do you know breath a huge sigh of relief when their chip shot leaves them a 3-footer for par? Trust me… it makes your opponent nuts.

The advantages of having ultimate confidence in your short putting game are too numerous to list but here are just a few:1. You won’t have to spend time kicking yourself on the drive home for those 4 or 5 strokes you “wasted”.

2. You can make smarter choices on chips and sand shots knowing you can make a little longer par putt.

3. “I just need to get up and down for par” is no longer just a euphemism. It actually means something.

4. You will make more birdies because you don’t have to lag it for fear of the 3-foot “come-backer”.

5. Amazing thing…those 5 and 7 footers start looking much shorter than they did before?

7. You become immune to pressure. You’ve trained your mind to go on “autopilot” for short putts.

The list could go on and on. The point is that if you start thinking this way and practice “immediate focus”, you WILL reap the benefits in your golf game. You don’t even have to “believe” for it to work. Golf season is just around the corner and if you try it, about midway through this Summer, you will realize that you are a “putting machine”. Mark my words. Your golfing buds will resort to heckling you out of frustration, but that will just amp up your focus! Remember, the goal is to achieve 100% focus any time, any where, under any conditions. Give it a shot. What have you got to lose…besides 7 or 8 strokes?

Golf has emerged as one of the favorite hobbies of men all around the world. People from all walks of life enjoy playing the game and are constantly looking for ways to improve their skills. Golf instruction video program offers lessons and training to those who aspire to hone their skills and become better golfers.

Golf instruction video offers visual learning. When a person engages his sense of sight and sound they have a tendency to learn quickly and retain information for a longer period of time. People understand and learn things better when the techniques of the game are demonstrated instead of simply reading the instructional text. They are extremely popular due to their affordable price and the flexibility to go back and review the lessons at any point of time convenient to you without loosening the string of your purse to pay for a brush-up lesson.

The advanced technology enables you to pause, rewind and stop the golf instructional at any point of time and learn the techniques at your own convenience which is not at all possible in the presence of a live instruction or through golf books. A live instructor usually teaches the methods to a group of learners and is unable to devote sufficient time to solve the problems and difficulties of an individual. When you take golf lessons through videos and watch important tournaments you can learn and improve your skills in a much better way than any other medium of instruction. Furthermore you can rewind any lesson and retain the methods and techniques through repetition of the action.

With the advent of the state-of-the-art technology and special effects golf instructional video programs are available with inserts, split screens, close up views, 3D and computer generated graphics. These advanced methods of instruction enhance explanation and present the information more effectively.

Author: Maxx Johnson

If you dream of playing golf someday, far away on exotic greens, with different people, enjoying the company of some of the best golfers in the world, the first thing you need to do is learn how to play golf with a golf instruction book. A few decades ago, learning golf required an instructor and good golf facilities, both of which can be extremely expensive. Now, if you ever need instruction on golf, a golf instruction book might just be your best friend. Books of golf tips are ideal for amateurs to pick up the basic principles and concepts of the game without digging too deep into their wallets. Though advanced training will require a coach and some good equipment, a golf instruction book is good way for beginners who want to practice in their own backyard to start in the game.

One of the challenges with a golf instructor is that quite frankly, they are hard to find as there are only a very few of them. In addition, you have the challenges of scheduling your time to match the instructors. The biggest worry of all is the tremendous expense involved in all this. For the average beginner, who is not even sure if he or she is going take the game seriously, a golf instruction book is a good starting point.

Golf instruction books are relatively cheap, provide a good level of know-how and instruction about the basics of golf and are available just about anywhere. Walk over to your nearest book store and you will find a considerable number of books offering instruction on golf. There are many beginner golf books that offer good advice for beginners. Another option is to read a book written by one of the great golfers like Tiger Woods to get a master’s perspective of the game. Apart from golf instruction books, there are also plenty of other books about the history of golf, about golf courses, about great players and their techniques that give truckloads of information about golf and its finer points. Such books are ideally suited for golf aficionados and fans who have never played golf, but would still like to know the history about the game.

Of course, the downside to having so many lesson books available to you, is that it becomes really easy to pick the wrong book. Such an experience can really kill your enthusiasm and motivation to play the game. So here are a few key points to keep in mind while shopping for a golf instruction book.

First, be sure of what you are looking for. We all have different learning styles and it is important to know what your learning style is. This way you can pick an instruction book written by an author who presents the lessons in a way that you can easily understand them. Do not buy a golf lesson book just because you want to learn more about a certain player or because a certain player supposedly wrote it. There is no sense in buying a golf instruction book if you want to know about players. If that is your goal, buy a golf book about the player themselves.

Second, while buying a book of golf tips, look for well-known authors and top 100 teachers. A bit of searching on the net will tell you what golf instruction books are popular.

Third, make sure the book that you are buying is written for a player of your current skill level. A book about advanced golf instruction will only frustrate a beginner golfer or a higher handicap golfer instead of improving it. Again, to find the best golf tips book for you, research is the key.

Keep in mind, the first step is always the most important. Make sure that you do you research and buy the right golf book for you and your current skill level and watch your game improve.

Author: D. Morgan

Have you ever taken a golf lesson? Surely you have gotten a golf tip. What do you remember of that lesson or that tip? Golf is a funny game; you can hear a great tip and put it to work for a few days, or even a few weeks, but then it is gone. It is gone and you are back to floundering all over again. I have learned not to pay too much attention to golf tips, but I got some very good golf advice once and I would like to share it with you.

I have had a lot of golf instruction in my life and most of it is of minimal efficacy. What I am about to say is going to sound radical, but I think that golf pros spend too much time on golf technique and not enough on golf art! Who teaches the art of golf anymore? Have you been to an instructor today? They put sensors all over your body and film you from two sides and then measure angles such as degree of hip turn, shoulder turn, knee flex, and on and on. I know that teaching the swing has value, but come on; the golf swing is not that hard. No one ever taught me to swing a baseball bat (well I was shown a few times), and yet I had a stellar high school career. No, today more than ever we need to learn the art of the game. We need to learn how to play golf not what to do. Just like baseball they taught us how to cover your position and how to run the bases, we in golf need to learn how to play the course.

I used to play regularly with a fellow who always shot 80 or 81. His best rounds were 77 or 78, but his bad rounds were never higher than 84 or 85. If you bet his score before the round, you would do best to guess 80 or 81. This guy was Mr. Steady; his scores did not deviate much at all. What was this all about, I wondered; how is he so consistent and the rest of us so up and down? Some of you might think that of course he is consistent, he shoots 80! Well, 80 isn’t that hot, I mean it is good, but lots of players are better than that, but few more consistent. So I analyzed his game and something stuck out to me, like a sore thumb.

This guy, let’s call him Rodney (since that is his name), was a most consistent player, because he intimately knew his limitations. Early on when I was playing with him, I always thought it odd that every time he hit it in the trees; he would chip it back to the fairway. Don’t get me wrong, I am not talking deep in the woods, I am talking in the trees, with a shot you could easily hook or fade out of and gain substantial yardage. He was a pretty straight hitter, so he never got too deeply into trouble, but when he was there, he took the absolutely safest route out. I mean come on, this was a good player a guy that shot many rounds in the 70’s, he knew how to fade and hook the ball. But that is not how he played, he knew he was a good enough player he could chip out, hit the next shot on the green and make a par or bogey. On par threes he would always take plenty of club, rarely missing the green short. Off the tee he would hit the fairway, using an iron if need be. He was a great chipper, because he played safe chips, not too many flops or risky stuff, chip and run if at all possible. A boring, boring player, but a partner you could count on not to take a big number.

I think that whether you are a 25 or a 5 handicapper, you need to learn to play golf. Rodney has fun playing boring golf and you will too. Low scores and winning never get old; instead lower scores make the game so much more enjoyable. Have you been there in the grill room, when one of the guys says, “you won’t believe the shot I hit from the woods on 13 today” and the first remark is “yeah, but what did you shoot?” Learn to play golf; it is an art not a science.
