IMPROVE YOUR PUTTING BY USING A CHALK LINE Tournament Professionals use the following drill to improve their putter face alignment, putting technique and confidence. If you ever attend a professional golf tournament, have a close look at the practice putting green and you will see a number of chalk-lines that have been placed on the green by either the professional or their coaches trying to resolve putting errors immediately. All that’s needed is a carpenter’s chalk line and a bottle of white chalk that can be purchased from your local hardware store for around $20.00. Find a 4 or 5 meter straight uphill putt on the practice green. Professionals typically look for an area near the edge of the green so that the line doesn’t disturb anyone else. Make several putts to ensure there is no break in the putt. Then, place the chalk-line hook inside the putting green cup and snap the chalk line on the green along the intended line of putt.Start about 1 meter from the hole, putt six balls. When you make all six putts in a row, move farther back in 1 meter intervals and repeat the drill until you make all the putts from this new distance. If you miss one ball stay at the distance until you hole all putts successfully. The chalk line allows you to be sure that the white line on the putter face is square to the target which promotes the proper stroke path and provides a visual aid to help you align your feet and body square to the target line. Putting uphill encourages hitting short putts firmly into the cup, which reduces the chances of a weak putt breaking out of the hole. In addition, practicing with six balls from each distance until completed successfully is a great mental drill and will help resolve unseen alignment errors in the stroke.Happy GolfingAlan Wilson PGAwww.qgsgolf.com

The First Key:A quality fitting can’t be done without you knowing your proper measurements. To calculate your best putter length you must base it on your height. You will do what’s known as a wrist-to-floor measurement. Measure form the inside of your wrist at the top of your hand all the way down to the floor. Keep this measurement ready for future reference.

The Second Key:Figure out what your posture is when you’re putting. Do you stand more upright like a Vijay Singh? If so you will be better suited to longer putters that have more upright angles. Or do you have more of a crouched posture like the great Jack Nicklaus? If you fall into this category you will need a shorter putter that has flatter angles with it.The

Third Key:Look at your hand position when you address the ball for a putt. There are a number of factors that will affect the proper loft at impact you need. These include offset putters, ball position, and hand position. Are you a player with pronounced forward press? This will create negative loft at the point of impact; therefore you will need additional loft to counteract this preference. If you have a conventional hand position then you will benefit from a standard lofted putter.

The Fourth Key:What’s your putting stroke like? You must consider this because depending on your wrist action, it will dictate what type of grips you need. Players with more of a pendulum action will choose wider or fatter grips to inhibit any unwanted wrist action. A golfer who has more wrist action in their stroke will prefer the smaller, thinner, more traditional sized grips. As these are believed to promote a smoother release of the ball.

The Fifth Key:Look at your stroke path. Do you have an inside-square-inside (small arc) path to your stroke? If so you probably have a tendency to pull your putts and will benefit from what’s known as heel shafted model putter. If you’re more of straight-back-straight-through stroke you will have more of a tendency to push your putts. You would then benefit more from a face balanced putter with the weight dispersed evenly in the putter head. With that being said, go get yourself a properly fitted putter. Every golfer knows good putting is essential and you’re leaving yourself at a huge disadvantage by not using the proper equipment!

Is your putting a weak area in your game? Utilze this putting drill to really solidify your putting game, take several strokes per round off your score and stop mishitting the ball.

It’s called “left-hand-low”. Both Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer felt they would have been better on the green if they had learned this way and it’s not too late for you to experiment with it.

If you’re serious about winning, you need to roll the ball in the hole consistently. The pros never leave anything to chance. They understand that the relationship between pace and line is crucial and by experimenting with this putting drill you may just get a better handle on both pace and keeping your ball in line.

If you miss a lot to the left or the right, chances are you’re not thinking much about how you grip the putter or, if you’re like me, you’ve been gripping your putter the same since your dad showed you how all those years ago.

If you grip your putter like most people do, the same or similar to how you grip your woods and irons, than its just far too easy to let the clubface rotate open or closed and push the ball right or left.

Follow this popular technique used by many pros and you’ll notice the difference in control right away.

Take your normal grip with your left hand on top and now reverse it so that your left hand is now on the bottom. It may not seem it at first but this is most ergonomically correct and natural way to grip the putter.

Now do the following to set up and put correctly every time:

1. Get your feet at least shoulders-width apart, knees pointed slightly out. Bend from your hips, relax your arms and make sure your head is just inside the ball. The ball should be about an inch in front of center with your putter in the center of your stance.

2. Your forearms should make a triangle and your wrists should never move. Your grip should be tense but low on the tension scale – don’t choke it to death! Pressure chokes off feel.

3. Locate a spot a couple of feet in front of you on your line – a bleached spot perhaps. Now follow this exact routine every time – look at the spot, the hole, the spot and now…stroke.

4. Understand that the putting stroke is one complete movement. Bring the putter back ¼ and forward through the ball ¾ for a nice, sooth roll with good feel. Obviously, bring the putter back farther on longer shots and try to maintain that 3-1 ratio.

Now you have a great set-up and by utilizing the “left-hand-low” grip, your lead hand will do the work, keeping yourself from “pushing” the putter into the ball or “stabbing” at it which will make the ball skip around.

Try it on the practice green or in the hallway or kitchen at your home until you get as comfortable with this hold as you are with your full-swing grip, then go and putt the lights out.

Thanks for reading. Good luck, good hustling.

The three lowest priorities to consider when choosing a putter are:
*The kind your best friend, who happens to be a great putter… unless of course you have had a chance to actually putt with it and you truly do like it.
*The one that looks nice or is the latest fad putter.
*The one the tour pro endorses
This is one of the most important considerations when choosing a putter; avoid all three of the above methods of choosing!
Putters have specifications and characteristics that can effect your putting in good or bad ways. Here are the qualities you need to look for:
*Shaft length and lie angel (the angle the shaft comes out of the head of the club) must fit you in three ways
*It must allow you to address the ball with your eyes directly over the target line while your hands are under your shoulders.
*If must be long enough so you are completely comfortable in your shoulders, legs or back when practicing for long periods of time and don’t experience unusual fatigue.
*You should choose a design that will help eliminate your most common mistakes.
To find out what these are put a piece of impact tape on the putter you now use and stroke 30 putts, if your marks are mostly near the heel you want a heel-shaft putter (the shaft enters the heel of the putter).
If you tend to strike towards the head, you want a center shafted putter.
*If you want alignment aids on your clubs, get them, they are legal and anything that helps your stroke is encouraged.
*Find a putter with a light club head, try a few strokes with it, then tape a couple of dimes to the back of the head, does it feel better or worse to put with the added weight.
*Grip size and shape are important factors; the grip needs to be small enough for you to be able to control easily, but big enough so your fingers don’t overlap uncomfortably.
In fact, the putter is the only club allowed to have a flat top on the grip. This allows for more consistent grip each time you use it.
Putting is such a ‘feel’ part of the game, so the putter you eventually choose will be the putter that best fits your eye and works best for you. So, take your time and try out several makes and models before you make your final decision.

Finding the perfect putter for your style of play can be the most difficult club to select. Unlike woods and irons, there is no set formula for fitting someone to the correct putter. The only way to find the right putter for you is to conduct your own search, try some putters out.

A frustration is that even if you find a putter that seems to work very well for you for quite some time, it may not always work that well, and you may have to replace it with a different style putter at some point. It’s just one of the little frustrating parts of the game of golf for some people. So what should you be looking for when shopping for a golf putter?

Perhaps the first thing to consider is the material that is used for the putter head itself. More so than any other golf club in your bag, your putter relies on feel to be used successfully. So the kind of material that is used for the putter head can be important. Unfortunately, there’s almost no end to the different kinds of material that are used for putter heads including stainless steel, brass, copper, aluminum and lots more. The only way to see how the putter head material transmits feel is to try them all out yourself. Lighter materials also tend to contribute to more hand action in the stroke, whereas heavier putter heads tend to slow down the stroke and help it remain more consistent.

The shape of your putter head can also be important. The two main shapes that are in use these days are the blade and the mallet. A blade putter looks like a miniature hockey stick, and the blade can vary from being solid to a more cavity-back design. Again, which style works best for you can only be determined by putting them both to use.

Another consideration with putters is how the shaft connects to the putter head. Some connect in the center of the putter head, whereas others connects at the heel or back of the putter instead. This is another area where there is no right or wrong choice that can be made. It simply depends on which seems to be most comfortable to you as you use it.

No discussion of putters can be complete without also mentioning the longer golf putters that have come into popular use in recent years. Generally, there are two main sizes of these longer putters. One is referred to as the belly putter, and the other is often called a broomstick putter.

Belly putters are usually around 40 in. or so in length and they are designed to be tucked into the body around the abdomen area as an anchor to help stabilize the putter throughout the stroke. This usually helps produce a more consistent putting stroke and eliminates a lot of extra hand movement.

Long putters are made to tuck into the chest area instead, allowing the golfer to take a more upright stance when putting. The hands are usually separated on the putter with one being at the top and the other about midway down the shaft. This kind of putter produces a true are in the swing and if used correctly can encourage a more consistent putting stroke.

It should be obvious that when it comes to golf putters there are plenty of choices that can be made, and the best putter for you is the one that you feel most comfortable with and gives you the best results, whichever one that may be.

If I were to ask you which club in your golf bag you use the most, would you say the putter? Well, you should because statistically speaking it is the most used club at your disposal. You are going to probably take several shots to get to the green from the tee but in order to do that you are probably going to use several different clubs. Let’s see. Shot one is a driver from the tee itself. Shot two is a fairway wood or an iron to get you onto or close to the green. If you fall short or fall into a bunker then the pitching wedge or sand wedge will come out. However, on average once you arrive at the green you will take two shots with your putter. That’s 36 shots in total over a whole round of 18 holes, and if you’re not that proficient with the putter then it will likely be even more than 36. Consequently, it is vital that you choose your putter carefully as you will need to get comfortable with a club that you use so much in order to get the best from it.

The choice of putter is not one that can be made for you. There are many different putters on the market which have different attributes but finding one which you are comfortable with is a decision that can only be made by you. It doesn’t matter how many experts you listen to who recommend a particular putter, if you are not comfortable with it then you will not put the ball in the whole consistently enough. It’s one of those times you need to go with your heart rather than your head.

To give you an idea though of the sorts of things you will have to decide about here is some basic information about the attributes of different putters. Putters tend to come with one of three different head styles. It will either be a typical blade style, a heel-toe, or a mallet head. There are also several lengths of club you could choose from and these are best categorised as normal, belly putters or long putters, otherwise known as broomhandle or broomstick putters.

Don’t think too much about what advantages one has over the other. Try several different ones out and go for the one that feels comfortable. As I said, go with your heart rather than trying to make a scientific choice.

Choosing the right putter can be the most important decision you make when it comes to your equipment. In fact, the putter is the club you use the most. Choosing the right one is like choosing a best friend. A few basic considerations to keep in mind when you are making such an important decision have to do with the bottom section or the “head” of the putter. This is where the brains of the putter are. There are other factors to consider such as the length and the grip but the brains of your best friend will be the most important part of choosing the right putter. Before looking at all of these considerations, let us first consider the most important part of this club known as the “head” of the putter.
The head is the most important part of the putter because it is the place where your ball will make contact on the green. The material in the head affects the way the ball moves and its direction across the green. Cheap or “dumb” putters are usually made of lighter plastic, zinc or aluminum. The lighter material requires you to hit the ball even harder on the green and allows for more mistakes. “Smart”, quality putters will usually incorporate stainless steel, titanium or brass. They can also have some wood mixed in or can be made of a combination of these other materials to create a more solid head. The difference will be felt when you hit the ball. On a slow green, the ball will move a lot easier. On a fast green, it will seem that you hardly have to hit it at all.
Perimeter weighting and Lie-angle – Two other important considerations in the head of the putter are perimeter weighting and lie-angle. Perimeter weighting has to do with the size and shape of the head. If you look, you will see a recess in the center of the head. This recess makes it possible for the weight of the head to be distributed in the toe and the heel which is preferable. The other important factor is the lie-angle in the putter head. This tells you whether the putter is sitting flat against the ground when you hold it. Put yourself in your most comfortable stance and ask the salesman to check this for you. If the putter head is not sitting flat against the ground, you may need to have it adjusted.
Length and Grip – Two final things to consider in a putter are the length and the grip. The standard length of a putter is thirty-five inches. If you tend to stand upright, you may want it longer. If you bend over a lot, a shorter putter may be necessary. There are also various grips to consider so that a golfer with smaller hands may need a smaller diameter grip and vice versa. Most importantly, choose a putter that looks and feels comfortable to you because this is going to be your best friend! With these considerations in mind, you will know that you have definitely chosen the right putter for you.

Wouldn’t you simply like to be given some reliable golf swing tips? Though, there are voices who claim one should learn by trial and error, many professional sites provide reliable golf swings tips online. The body movement is everything in golf; this is why you need to learn how to actually feel the club as a natural extension of your body. Here are some golf swing tips to make you feel more natural and master your moves in the best way possible. You may use other sources to assist you: golf videos, swing instructions or friends’ advice, the important thing is not to forget you should be having fun.

One first golf swing tip for the peace of your mind is not to believe a setup to be too tough a challenge, as it is not. Most beginners who look for golf swing tips only need to brush their swing up a little and they’ll soon see improvements; it usually goes hand in hand with the hand grip of the club, so be careful with that too. Golf swing tips say that a too tight a grip will ruin the move; just relax and hold the club firmly but tension-free, otherwise you’ll kill the effect of the body swing. The club should make a forty five degree angle in front of you, so your club will be pointing forward.

Then another, golf swing tip would be to start the movement from the feet up and not vice versa. When you backswing you will also have to move the head in that direction too, thus creating some sort of axis, with the feet and the legs at the bottom. A golf swing tip says that when you hit the ball, your head should move three to even five inches to the right. After you made the shot, your head will move forward, a little over the tip of the left foot, creating a second axis and some sort of circular movement. Watch several professional players before you try this golf swing tip yourself.

Another golf swing tip would tell you to avoid putting too much speed in a swing. Those golf players that look fast aren’t necessarily good. Hitting the ball fast means that the arms move independently from the body, which totally contradicts golf principles. The real golf swing tip here is to make the body and arms move synchronically, meaning that the two would move like one, following the same speed pattern.

Getting the right golf putter is perhaps the most important decision that you can make regarding the clubs in your bag. Although lots of inexperienced golfers spend inordinate amounts of time practicing with their driver for long-distance shots, the facts prove that you can improve your game and lower your score much quicker by putting most of your practice emphasis on putting instead.

In fact, even many pros who have exceptionally consistent swings and are outstanding in every other part of their game, often have trouble with putting, sometimes even losing tournaments due to their putting woes. So if you are a newer or less experienced golfer be sure to pay attention to your putting game, and get a good putter that you can feel comfortable with.

Getting just the right putter for you can be a bit of a challenge though since there are so many types and styles of putters available today. In fact, at times it can even get a little overwhelming when you see all the different kinds of putters that are in use. How do you choose from among them all? How do you know which one is best for you?

Those are all very good questions, and the truth is that there is no standard answer that can be provided. Finding the perfect putter for your individual game is something that only you can do by trial and error. It may require using several different kinds of putters over a long period of time before you can decide on which one works best for you. But don’t just use a certain putter because someone else uses it, or you were told that it was the best one to use. Be sure to experiment on your own instead.

With all of that said, there are some basic things that you need to know about putters to be able to make the best choice. The first has to do with the kind of material that is used for the putter head. Since putting has more to do with feel than perhaps any other type of golf shot, the material that is used for the putter head will be very important. The confusing part is that putters are often made from all sorts of materials including stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and much more. So which is best for you?

Again, this is something that only you can decide by experimenting with different types of putters yourself. Many golf pro shops and golf equipment retail stores carry a wide variety of putters that you can try out in the store. It’s not a bad idea to take advantage of this opportunity to get familiar with the different types and styles of putters that are available.

Another consideration when selecting a putter is the putter head shape. Generally speaking, most putter head shapes fall into two basic categories, either blade or mallet. You’ll see golfers of all different kinds of skill levels using putters with either head shape. A blade putter sort of looks like a small hockey stick, and they can come in all kinds of designs including the solid flat blade and also cavity-back designs to help keep the putter head straight through impact.

The second putter head shape to consider is the mallet putter. These are easy to recognize because they usually have a head that is larger and more round. The weight is often distributed throughout the putter to help provide a more consistent putting stroke.

As you can see, there are plenty of choices to be made when selecting a golf putter. Hopefully this information will help you understand more about the choices that you have when choosing a putter, but only you can make the final decision by using it yourself.

Basic golf swing tips may simply be all you that you require to keep you from striking those heavy shots, hooks, or slices. For instance, merely shifting the ball location may set right that thin shot, which you tend to hit off the tee. Rather than getting dejected and vowing never again to turn up at a golf course, contemplate on a couple of tips regarding golf swing and strive at perfecting your golf swing.
Now tips on golf swing can be collected from a number of sources. A fine place to begin is with recent golf books or golf magazines. Here it is possible for you to come across golf swing tips from experts or teachers and instructors of professional golfers. Orders for magazines and books containing tips on golf swing can be placed online.
In case you are extremely earnest regarding getting a few vital tips regarding golf swing, and you possess the necessary money and the time at your disposal, think about registering for a few golf lessons or joining a golf clinic where a professional gives you expert advice.
In order to put you on the track of learning the appropriate golf swing tips, the following are some golf swing tips, which deal with the fundamentals of a golf swing.
1. Amongst the most vital tips on golf swing is to maintain a square clubface. Hitting the golf ball by means of a square clubface ensures that the ball goes straight and a long way. In order to maintain the clubface square, you require to keep a steady golf swing plane. Practice bringing the golf club right back and subsequently follow through on the very same swing plane.
2. Next, timing is of the essence in the case of your golf swing. Now you may wish to possess a steady swing speed all through the whole swing. In fact it does not help out with your golf swing if you tend to bring the golf club right back slowly and then speed up right through your swing.
3. Then, golf fitness is an essential factor for developing your golf swing. Doing some easy golf exercises can vastly enhance litheness and power.
4. The kind of golf grip that you have is a further factor in honing your golf swing. Ensure that you do not have a very rigid golf grip, or else it will hamper your golf swing action. A fine way of determining whether your golf grip remains very tight is if your arms and hands become sore after you have finished playing a game of golf.
5. In fact, the best tip on golf swing may not exactly be to your liking but it is nothing but practice, and more practice, that will assist you with your golf swing the most. The greater the time devoted to practicing, or being out there on the practice green or driving range, the greater the development you will find not just in the golf swing, but also in your total performance as well as scoring.

It’s been many months now of weekly practice our there on the golf course taking shot after shot. Unfortunately you still haven’t improved your handicap. Your short game is hopeless, driving inaccurate and you just can’t sink a putt to save your life. What do you do? You decide to take a golf lesson or two.

There are three main points that you need to take into consideration when it comes to choosing and getting the most out of your golf lessons. One, the choice of instructor, two coming prepared to the lesson and three, the expectations you must have of yourself after each lesson is finished.

Instructor

Your golf lesson is a valuable investment of your time, energy and hard earned money. Therefore, the first step towards getting the most out of your golf lesson is locating and working with the right instructor. The pro at the golf shop may not necessarily be the right coach for you. Ask your fellow golfers for recommendations on who they may have heard is a good instructor or who they have personally used for a golf lesson.

The next step is to find an instructor whose qualifications match your current level of play. In other words, you don’t need a highly qualified instructor to teach you the basics of golfing.

In addition, to gain the optimum benefits of your golf lesson, it is important that you are comfortable with your instructor’s personality and style of teaching. A good personality and teaching style should consist of encouragement, patience and the challenging of the student in a positive manner.

Finally, on choosing your instructor, make sure that the length of their availability matches the number of lessons you wish to take. There is nothing worse than going through this process, being comfortable with the instructor and then finding out that they are not available after the second or third lesson.

Preparation

It is highly important that you come to each one of your lessons with a series of questions prepared. Take note after each round of the things you need the most help with. Take a scrapbook and jot down after every misplaced shot what exactly you did with your swing and how you felt when you played the stroke.

It is extremely important that you practice everything you have been taught in between golf lesson sessions. This means that every time you go to a range or play out on a course you are constantly applying what you have been taught for every shot you make. Don’t just think that by going to a few lessons, you will automatically start to play better.

Finally, make sure that you are mentally prepared for the lesson to be given. Have all of your needed tools and equipment with you and remember that what we generally get out of something is in proportion to what we give.

Your Own Expectations

At the conclusion of each lesson you should have reached some sort of goal or expectation that you had of yourself. Whether this means you found the answers to every one of the questions you had for your instructor or maybe you hit further than you’ve ever hit before. Whatever it is, just make sure you know beforehand so you have something to strive for.

Constantly ask you instructor for feedback and make sure you tell him/her to be blunt with you right from the very beginning. Constructive criticism is very important if you want to see vast improvements in your game.

Also, expect assignments and practice techniques that can be implemented to correct certain aspects of your golf game. Follow through on these assignments and practice these techniques as often as possible knowing that it is in practice we improve the skill level.

A good client wrote to me saying that her problem is not so much thinking negative thoughts but ‘thinking at all!’ How many of you can relate to that? She went onto say that if any sort of thought enters her head, even positive thoughts, she then starts trying too hard. If she just swings and hits without thinking then she gets much better results. She believes the problem lies with a deeper lack of trust within herself to play the shot well. I thought this was a great way to lead into this week’s newsletter and I hope that this will help to put into perspective how I believe a lot of you feel on this subject. So what is trust? Simply put ‘trust’ means ‘confidence’. When you trust others it means that you have confidence in them; in their abilities and their integrity. If you do not trust someone it means you are suspicious of their motives, capabilities and their agenda! We all know when a relationship is built on trust and when one is not. Communication is easy and flows and this is also true when you trust yourself. Personal trust is all about having a good relationship with YOU! Your self-talk will be positive and motivating and above all else your actions will effortless. Your mood will be good and any task a breeze.I often talk about ‘playing in the zone’ a term you may have heard top athletes and golfers use; if you do not fully trust yourself to be capable of what you want to achieve, then it will be impossible to achieve this state.Self-trust is also about credibility; it is all about developing integrity, intent and a capability to create the results that make you believable to yourself and to others. It is about delivering that great shot time and time again and giving it your best. This is where your trust can take a battering. If you play a series of poorly executed shots your trust in your ability will begin to waver. To maintain a good sense of trust in you ability then you need to have the facts to support this.Well I have news for you – even the best in the world do not hit perfect shots each and every time they step up to the ball! This is a game called GOLF – frustrating, fun and above all else it is challenging. If Tiger or Laura Davies have a few bad shots (of course their bad shots and ours are likely to be quite different) then losing trust in their ability to play is only going to compound the rest of their game. It is the same for golfers at any level. If you go out and start a round of golf with the expectations that every swing and every putt has to be great and anything less will send you into a spiral of negative emotions and loss of confidence then maybe you should choose another hobby!Golf is all about how you handle the ‘not so good stuff’ – the good stuff is of course easy to handle. It only takes one or two bad moments to throw your self-talk and mood into a place where making a good golf shot will be almost impossible. This also needs to be put into perspective because if golf was really easy and every shot was great then where would be the challenge to come back and try again?Essentially, it all boils down to the question ‘Do I trust myself?’ When you step up to take a swing at that ball and you do not trust yourself to create the results you seek then your confidence will suffer and along with that so will the shot you take.Whatever decision you make with regards to how you play your golf shot make sure you make your intention to yourself clear and always act with integrity. By that I mean if you do not fully trust yourself and make that commitment to your golf club choice, direction and your capability to execute a strong and confident swing then you will simply lose trust in your ability to follow through. When this happens you will lose confidence in your ability. Thus a downward spiral can begin as you start to create your own reality based on a lack of trust in yourself. It will then be difficult to restore trust in yourself that will give you the confidence you need to play well. It is very similar to when someone else lets you down and you lose trust in that person. It is hard to feel the same way about them again. If you start to create this self-fulfilling prophecy as you step up to take that swing; a belief that you do not trust yourself to make a good shot will become a part of how you play your game of golf. Then when the result is a poor shot this can often be accompanied by self-talk such as ‘I am no good at this why do I bother’ etc. This in turn will affect your confidence and essentially take a lot of the enjoyment away from playing.I often hear from my clients that they are unable to focus on every shot and that they find it difficult to put previous bad shots behind them; ultimately what will then happen is all this pent up frustration will be taken out on the next shot. The trust in your ability has gone along with your confidence to play well. REMEMBER: The past does not define your future; unless you allow it! Losing trust in yourself which in turns affects your confidence is not a great plan when golf is ultimately a game of confidence! You are not giving yourself the best of starts to execute a natural and effortless swing if this is where your emotions and feelings are being guided! The good news is that whatever level your lack of self-trust happens to take on board at any given moment during your game; that as a human being you have a great propensity to restore trust not only in others but in yourself. Humans really do want to think and feel the best of others and of themselves. The key is in your ability to ‘forgive’. In the case of a poorly executed shot you can either berate yourself; which means losing trust in your ability and along with that the confidence needed to step up to the mark and take the next shot. This will also encourage you to buy into the belief that you are ‘no good’ which in turn will affect your trust and confidence.SO WHAT CAN YOU DO? You can look at every shot as a BRAND NEW OPPORTUNITY… A GIFT… and approach your swing with the knowledge that you have at some point in your golfing journey made (more than) a few really great swings and shots; so why not use EACH brand new opportunity as a new challenge to do your best? If for what ever reason your shot is not as good as you had hoped there’s always the next shot and the next BRAND NEW OPPORTUNITY! That is the game called golf J You have the power within you to be your own ‘best-friend’ – it is just up to you to use that ability to support yourself when you need it the most. Give it your best and if that means picking yourself up after and dusting yourself off afterwards and forgiving yourself – then DO IT. Remember it is just a game, a hobby, not a matter of life and death.MAKE EVERY SWING AND EVERY SHOT COUNT AND WATCH WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR SCORE CARD and your confidence! Above all else put it in perspective and ENJOY YOURSELF!

As spring is coming upon many of us, we all have that twinkle in our eye that this year is going to be different. I am going to commit to my golf game and take a golf lesson. Ok, actually a series of golf lessons. That is great but coming up with a structured full game improvement plan will help to keep you on task and get results for you quicker.
I can hear all of you screaming right now. Wow! A structured full game improvement plan sounds serious! I do not have time for a golf lesson! Well the good is that you do and we are going to explain how to put a structured full game improvement plan or a series of golf lessons together with your golf instructor and what you should expect out of him or her.
You will first need to find a qualified golf instructor who gives golf lessons. This is not as easy as it may sound. It is kind of along the lines of finding an accountant or financial planner for your money. Ask better players how they learned the game and who they take golf lessons. Maybe you are lucky enough to live in an area where there are some nationally recognized teachers. Either way you will be able to come up with a group that you are interested in meeting.
In your meeting over the phone or in person, you need to find out how that person is qualified to teach golf lessons and who else have they taught. I would not be looking for them to run off a bunch of names that play on tour unless that is your goal. Instead, I would look for names of people that have a similar handicap as yourself and what their progress was.
Understanding that you are not taking golf lessons from them right then and there, you will still want to hear a generalization of their golf swing theory. This is very important. It is important because this will give you an idea of how the person communicates with you. If what he or she says sounds logical on top of creating an open communication with you, then even better. If the potential instructor only talks about working on the driving range and not improving the other areas of your game such as your short game and putting, choose another instructor. Period.
Another question to ask about golf lessons is if they will be using any training aids during their lessons. Many times training aids will help you get a feeling or a visual that is difficult to grasp. Training aids are made for all aspects of the game including the full swing, chipping, pitching and putting. Sometimes you are eligible for a discount on the various training aids because you are their student. It never hurts to ask!
The last thing that you will want to know in your initial conversation about golf lessons is how the golf lesson will be summarized or how will you be given your homework. This will vary from instructor to instructor. Some simply end the lesson while some others will email you the notes that they had about the lesson directly to you. This information should also include how many times you should practice before the next appointment.
I told you setting up a structured full game improvement plan would not be that difficult. Following the advice in this article will help you fin d the best instructor for you and in turn help you reach your golfing goals.

The following paragraphs summarize the work of golf lessons experts who are completely familiar with all the aspects of golf lessons. Heed their advice to avoid any golf lessons surprises.

Those of you not familiar with the latest on golf lessons now have at least a basic understanding. But there’s more to come.

If you’ve been thinking about taking up golf, or if you’re a golfer in search of a better game, you may have considered golf lessons. But are golf lessons really beneficial? And how do you find a pro who will offer good advice?

There are some who swear that lessons are vital and others who say that practice is the only thing that will improve your golf game. The truth seems to lie somewhere in the middle. But before you drop your coach or sign up for lessons, consider what it is that you hope golf lessons will accomplish. Outlining your goals may help you decide whether you truly need lessons or simply more time on the course.

If you play with others who play exceptionally well, you may want to find someone to give you some help with your game. Whether that’s a paid coach or merely a friend who plays well is strictly a personal choice. Getting some pointers and tips may be a good way to ensure that you don’t totally embarrass yourself in front of other players.

If you’re serious about the game, you’ve probably been involved long enough that you don’t need advice on whether to get a coach. But if you’ve only recently discovered the joy of golfing, you may find yourself looking for a way to improve your game. Golf lessons could very well be the answer.

Some people say that lessons give them a set time to practice and an opportunity to completely focus on the game. You’ll typically be less interrupted than if you were playing on your own, stopping to chat with friends along the way. But others say the simple fact of having someone scrutinizing every move and offering constant advice is more distracting than helpful. Decide whether you’re one of those who accept direction and works well in that situation. That’s a major clue as to whether golf lessons are a good idea.

Remember that a golf coach’s job is to teach you to golf correctly. That means that there are some habits that he (or she) will be trying to ingrain and others they’ll be trying to break. While golfing correctly is a terrific goal, many golfers have some bad habits that they tout as benefiting their game. Changing your grip, adjusting your stance or even using different equipment may be among the “must do” list from your coach. You may resist those changes. You have two options. You can do your best to follow the instructions, or you can explain that you aren’t planning to change that particular habit. If you don’t plan to change, you may need to reexamine your decision to take lessons. Without following directions, lessons may become a waste of time and effort on both parts, and money on yours.

Golf lessons are great for some people. It’s a personal decision whether you are one of those who will benefit from a coach – formal or informal. But remember that the most important thing to improve your golf game is simply practice.

As your knowledge about golf lessons continues to grow, you will begin to see how golf lessons fits into the overall scheme of things. Knowing how something relates to the rest of the world is important too.

Have you ever noticed how many ads are on the television or in magazines for the latest, greatest drivers? How many of those ads promise longer, straighter drives? Fade the ball, draw the ball, and hit the green from 300 yards?
Have you noticed what is missing from the majority of those advertisements? They all concentrate on the distance and the accuracy of the drive you can achieve if you buy their new driver for $300 or $400 but they do not say “we will cut your score!”
The simple fact is, if you improve your game you will not spend ever increasing amounts on new golf equipment searching for that mystical, magical club.
Are you an average Joe golfer? If I gave you the latest hi-tech driver could you consistently hit a 350 yard drive? I’m guessing probably not. Would you buy a Ferrari that goes 200 miles per hour and expect to use it for the weekly grocery shop? Of course not, so why then do so many golfers rush out and spend $400 on a driver which spends most of it’s time in the bag?
If you are not drowning in money then the cash you do spend on your golf game needs to be getting you the most value; more bang for your buck. Spend your money where it will give you the most return.
Where is your most golf played? I’m not talking about which courses you play but where you make the majority of your golf strokes. Would you believe that around three quarters of your golf game is spent getting the ball the last 120 yards to the green? Take out the drives and putts and golf is virtually about wedge play.
Buying a good set of wedges will be the best thing you can do for your golf game. With the pros now carrying at least three wedges and usually four, even five in some cases they are leaving the driver out of the bag completely. Does this give you an idea of where the Tigers, Phils and Ernies think the action is?
The golf wedge is the average players’ best friend and with a little practice you can be peppering the green with birdie opportunities like never before. Fewer putts make lower scores and that is what most golfers want, isn’t it?
I buy all my wedges online at auction so I can further reduce the cost. The great benefit to this is that I can save money on a club, try it out for a few weeks and if it doesn’t suit me or my game I simply list it at an online auction and sell it on. Prices are fairly constant so as long as I don’t damage it I generally get my money back, some times I even make a bit of profit.
So, to round up, leave the jokers with too much money in the woods whilst you drop yet another one on the green. May the golf gods go with you.

There’s no perfect rhythm for golf. You can play at a fast pace or you can play it at a slower pace—and still play it well. How quickly or slowly you play doesn’t necessarily matter as far as your golf handicap is concerned. Unless, of course, you’re playing at breakneck speed or you play at an absolute crawl. Then, mistakes can happen. Otherwise, you can play quickly or slowly and still do well. In fact, you’ll probably find as many players with low golf handicap who play the game slowly as you do who play the game quickly.

What matters, as I’ve said before in my golf tips, is playing the game at your natural rhythm. Rest assured, everyone has his or her own natural rhythm. If you like to take your time with things, you probably like to play at a moderate pace. If you like to zip through things, you probably like to play at a faster pace. The key is not to let what’s happening on the course affect your natural rhythm. When that happens, you often lose both your rhythm and your timing. To trash scoring barriers, you should try to maintain your natural rhythm through the whole round

Find Your Rhythm Early

To squeeze the most out of your game on any given day, work on getting into a nice rhythm early. If you use a pre-round routine and stick with it throughout the season, it makes getting into a rhythm easier. Of course, following a pre-round routine every time is difficult. Players taking golf lessons often say they don’t have the time to go through a pre-round routine. But if you’re serious about lowering your golf handicap, you’ll make time for it. A pre-round routine prepares you mentally and physically for the challenges ahead.

In addition, a pre-round routine eliminates the nervousness or strangeness you sometimes feel before a round. It’s why the pros work hard to gain their rhythm before they tee off. It’s even more important for weekend golfers to work on their rhythm because they don’t play as often as the pros. Tiger Woods copied his pre-round routine from Jack Nicklaus. Tiger uses the same six clubs on the practice range, ending with the club he is going to use off the first tee. Tiger’s not working on his swing here. He’s working on his rhythm.

Play When Ready

In addition to a pre-round routine, always use a pre-shot routine. A good pre-shot routine is critical to playing with consistency. The tendency when your playing a match is to speed up mentally, especially when you’re under pressure. This tendency breaks your rhythm, throwing you off. It also creates tightness in your hands and arms. When you’re tight, it’s harder to fell your rhythm. You start making mistakes. A good pre-shot routine relaxes you, calms you down, and encourages rhythm. Never play a shot before you’re ready.

In addition, always walk to your next shot at a steady pace. Do the same between holes. The extra time gives you a chance to plan your next shot. And don’t get too pumped up after a good shot. Or, too down after a bad shot. Either can affect the next shot. Pace yourself and always try to play within yourself. Your natural rhythm will do the rest for you.

Use A Metronome For Putting

Another critical area is putting. It’s just as important to build rhythm for putting prior to a round as it is for making a full swing. Actually, it might be more important, since nearly 30 percent of your shots on any given day are putts. So in addition to taking swings at the practice range, hit the putting green. One way to build rhythm in your putting is to practice with a metronome—a device for keeping beats in music. Use this device to practice your putting stroke.

If you really want to refine your game, here’s a solid golf tip: Play at your natural rhythm. It improves your scores and your golf handicap.

Hitting a bad drive or a poor approach shot or missing a short putt can get to golfers sometimes, even those with low golf handicaps. Occasionally, golfers take their frustrations out on a club. Putters for whatever reason seem to bear the brunt of golfer frustration. Most players taking golf lessons from me know of someone who’s thrown his putter in the water or otherwise damaged it during the course of play.

It’s not just weekend golfers who wreak havoc on their putters, either. Professionals do it, too. Woody Austin, winner of the 2004 Buick Championship, got so frustrated with his game once that he bent the shaft of his putter on his head after missing a crucial putt. He’s not the only pro who’s done it, either. That raises the question: What do you do when you don’t have a putter to putt with?

The Rule

The rule on clubs is straightforward. If a club is damaged during the course of play, you can replace it. For example, if something happens to a club during the course of normal play—the clubhead falls off, the shaft gets bent while hitting—you can replace the club. Tiger Woods sent a PGA official to the trunk of his Buick during the 2004 Deutsche Bank Tournament to get him another sand wedge after damaging his on some rocks while swinging.

However, if you damage your club through some action other than during the normal course of play, like smashing it on a rock or bending it over your knee, you’re stuck. You can’t replace it. You have to discontinue using it and play without a replacement. In other words, if you intentionally damage your putter, you have to pay the price. Now the question becomes: what do you putt with to finish the round?

You have several options when it comes to using another club. Let’s look at three of them:

A Wedge

One option is a wedge. The advantage to using a wedge is that the shaft lengths of a putter and a wedge are similar. The length allows you to not only take your normal putting stance, but also set up with your eyes directly over the ball. Setting up with your eyes directly over the ball, as I’ve mentioned in my golf tips, is essential to good putting.

The disadvantage with using a wedge is that your have to strike the middle of the ball with the thin leading edge of the blade. That’s not easy. It takes a great deal of precision and confidence to hit a golf ball with the leading edge of a club. It may not be something you want to try if you’re already angry or upset over your play. It might just make things worse instead of better, costing your strokes.

A Driver

Some players with low golf handicaps use a driver. The advantage of using a driver to putt with is that it is second only to the putter when it comes to having the least amount of loft. A driver has a face loft of 5 to 10.5 degrees, while the putter has a loft of about 1 degree. The large face also makes it easier to make good contact with the ball.

The driver’s disadvantage is the length of its shaft. It’s hard setting up directly over the ball with a club that has such a long shaft. To get comfortable, you’ll need to stand farther away from the ball. Your eyes won’t be directly over the ball. Also, the ball tends to pop of the driver’s face because of the mass of the clubface.

Using A Hybrid

A third option is a hybrid. It doesn’t quite have the driver’s low degree of loft, but the shaft is a much shorter. That enables you to get a little closer to the target line with your eyes. But the ball pops off a hybrid’s clubface just like it does with the driver. So you need to be careful when using this club. Some players use a hybrid to hit shots just off the green. Why not try it as a putter, if your putter becomes incapacitated?

Any of these three clubs can work. You might want to spend some time practicing with them though. That way you’ll at least have some feel for the clubs as a putter should you ever need to use them. However, if you’re really serious about lowering your golf handicap, you’ll work on keeping your frustrations in check and saving your putter. It’s the best way to improve.

Improving putting is the fastest way of chopping strokes off a golf handicap—bar none. Anywhere from 30 percent to 40 percent of your strokes are putts during a round. If you can reduce your putts per round, you’ll quickly lower your scores and your golf handicap. For most players, improving their putting means spending more time on the practice green than in the driving bay.

But to dramatically improve your putting, you need the right putter. Whether it’s a traditional or an untraditional putter, you won’t improve much if you don’t have the right stick. That’s why it’s critical to find the right stick. Since that can be daunting, given all the putters now available, we’ve provided some golf tips below on choosing the right putter.

Find A Real Grass Putting Surface

Some people choose a putter based on hype. Others choose one based on cost. Or, they choose one because Tiger Woods recommends it. Those aren’t the best ways of choosing a putter. Ultimately, selecting a putter comes down to a combination of physical and psychological factors. It also comes down to how the putter feels and how you feel about it. If a putter doesn’t feel right, you won’t improve much.

What you want is to find a putter that instills confidence—confidence in yourself as a golfer and in the club itself. So compare types and models. Many sporting goods stores or golf warehouses have putting surfaces you can test putters on. These in-door surfaces are good and they can help. They give you get a feel for a putter. But they’re not the best way of testing putters.

The best way of testing putters is on real grass. We can’t emphasize that enough. If you’re looking for a new putter, find a store or a local club with a real grass putting green and spend the afternoon testing putters. If you can’t find a location with a real grass putting green, see if the store will let you test it out on the course. Testing a putter on grass gives you the best chance of determining how a putter will perform over the long haul.

Factors To Consider In A Putter

Ideally, you want to choose your putter systematically. Here’s a five-step method for doing so:

1. Take the look-see test. Review all the putters available. Examine the different types and models. Then, based on the “feel good-play good” theory, select a few to test. One factor to consider is heft. Another is alignment method. A third is putterhead type. Make sure your comfortable with all three. When you find one you’re comfortable with, put it aside

2. Try each putter out. Take the putters you set aside and make a series of long and short putts of similar length with each putter.

3. Select two or three putters. Choose two or three you like the best and test those out extensively. Don’t judge them just by how many putts you sink. Instead, judge them based on how the putter feels and how the ball rolls off the putter.

4. Make putts with your eyes closed. Hit a few putts with your eyes closed. This gives you a feel for the putter’s weight and how it feels when it contacts the ball. Try narrowing it down to two putters.

5. Choose the best putter. Make the decision. Again, don’t base your choice on cost or which player on the pro tour uses it. Base it on how the putter feels, how comfortable it is, and if it instills confidence.

Don’t Look Back

After you’re made your decision, don’t look back. You’ve chosen a putter. That’s it. You’re done. Buyer’s remorse never helped anyone. Instead, practice with the new putter as much as possible. Practice helps you get comfortable with it and develop confidence in the putter and yourself.

If you’ve chosen an untraditional putter, like a belly putter or a long putter, schedule some golf lessons with a local pro. He or she has a wealth of golf tips on grip and stroke. These will increase putter comfort and putting accuracy.

Improving putting reduces golf handicaps. Sometimes it improves a handicap dramatically. So take some golf lessons on putting, even if you have a traditional putter. But first, make sure you have the right putter. If you’re looking for a new one, follow our five-step method above and take your time selecting one. It will pay off in the long run.

Putting is probably the single most important golf technique in the game, never forget that half of all strokes allowed for in a par score are putts. The Putting Green is an almost sacred place for golfers. It is where games are won and lost. It looks so easy – there are none of those careful fine points to tune in your swing to achieve the long low drive or the stunning iron shot. Some of the best putters produce astounding strokes with an indifference that suggests disdain to us lesser mortals who struggle with our putters. Improving your putting is a great way to improve your scores quickly but how do you do that – and why should you?
As to why, there is a simple answer which is best illustrated by going back to the last time Tiger Woods won The Open. Sergio Garcia hit almost 80% of the greens and 66% of the fairways, striking the ball well throughout the tournament, but his putting let him down. Even though he hit most of the greens in regulation, Sergio averaged nearly two putts on each of those greens. Tiger won the tournament, he hit far less greens than Sergio but made almost a quarter less strokes on each of those greens. Taken over the entire tournament, this difference is why it was Tiger’s name on the trophy!
Putting makes up over 40 percent of your game, so its importance cannot be over-emphasized. You should devote at least that percentage of your practice time to it. Nothing spoils a good round more than weak putting so when you practice make sure you work on both the mechanics of the stroke and the feel. Putting has often been described as more inspiration than technique and there is no doubt that some good putters simply cannot explain it, they are, as it were, born to it. But the poor putter needn’t give up. Working hard to pick up some essentials, along with a sensible practice regime, will result in steady improvement and the results will soon show – remember that old golfing adage – drive for show and putt for dough! Once your score is consistent and you have developed your game it is time to start thinking about developing feel. Putting feel is an acquired skill, your brain needs to determine how the length of your stroke relates to distance. This begins by ensuring you always make solid contact with the ball, and that comes from those good fundamental techniques you should be practicing. The basic stroke motion is a pendulum action. When putting, your hands should always be slightly ahead of both the club head and the ball. Your arms and shoulders should form a triangle that moves as one during your back swing and stroke – exactly like a pendulum.
There are many different grips demonstrated by the pro’s when putting but it really doesn’t make much difference as long as you know what you’re doing with the putter head. As long as you can keep the edges of the putter square to the target during the stroke you will be OK. For example, keeping your left-hand low tends to keep the face angle more square as it swings up like a pendulum. The ‘up’ motion gets the ball rolling earlier, which creates a straighter line, reducing the potential for break, almost like taking the bottom of the ball and rolling it up over the top. Try experimenting with different grips and see which one works best for you. Putting with your rear arm can give a feeling of acceleration through the putt, which is critical for creating a smooth, end-over-end roll. Rear-arm putting accomplishes this mainly because of the weight of the putter, with two hands it’s easier to make stabbing or decelerating strokes.
You should never aim to get the ball just as far as the hole, especially if you are off the green. Putting from the fringe or even just off the green is very different to putting on the surface of the green. More often than not putts are not hit with enough power and can end up getting bogged down in the longer fringe grass. Even if you are on the green you must hit the ball hard enough – a ball that doesn’t reach the hole has no chance of going in! Any competent golfer will tell you that a properly struck putt should roll approximately seventeen inches past the hole, as if the hole wasn’t there. This definition is based on the work of Dave Pelz, a professional golf teacher and Ex-NASA Physicist who has written may books on the subject, such as ‘The Putting Bible’ and who is widely regarded as the greatest putting coach working today. Of course, this distance is approximate, depending on specific grass types and environmental conditions, it may vary a little either way, but the seventeen-inch distance is the best rule of thumb for overall conditions.
Stance is less likely to be a consideration in putting than in any other stroke. No hard and fast rule can be established, no two golfers follow the same style. A still and steady body position with a motionless head is, however, one of the essentials that all coaches agree on. Putting is much too delicate a process to withstand any body motion. How you stand is a matter of trial and error, if you feel comfortable that is as good a guide as any. An open stance with the right foot well up to the ball can to be a good position, your body should rest easily on your legs. The length of the club will dictate any bend in the knees but always remember the three golden rules of golf when making your putt – keep your head still, keep your head still, keep your head very still!
Sometimes your putting goes wrong in the middle of a round – but with just a few seconds of concentration you can generally get it back on track – provided that you do your practice. Step off to the side at a time when it won’t delay play and just close your eyes for a few seconds. Swing your arms the way you do on a putt, just like you do when you practice – is your body balanced? Is your head still? Are you achieving the pendulum motion? Check these simple things and you will soon get your putting back on track.
Putting is the greatest test of skill on the golf course and requires regular, high quality practice sessions, ideally on a putting green or with something that represents an actual hole as nearly as possible. Most golfers typically practice putting whenever they can find a suitable surface either outdoors or indoors. It is the most neglected part of the practice routine of many amateur golfers and yet it is the one thing that can reduce your score overnight. If you want to improve your golf techniques quickly and get your handicap down- practice your putting.

Not every PGA pro hits every green in regulation. But all are adept at saving par. Otherwise they wouldn’t be professionals. Weekend golfers, on the other hand, struggle to save par—and it costs them. It adds strokes to their scores and boosts their golf handicaps. If this is you, don’t be embarrassed. You’re not alone. Plenty of golfers have the same problem. But you can change that. By learning to hit par saving shots, you can dramatically cut your golf handicap.

One good way to learn to hit a par saving shot is to watch the pros in action. By studying how they do it, you can learn golf tips that can help you get up and down more often. Previously, watching golf tournaments on television was the only way to see the pros in action. But thanks to the Internet, gleaning golf tips from pro golfers is easier than ever. When it comes to saving par, keep an eye on Luke Donald, Ben Crane, Jose Marie Olazabal, and Tiger Woods. They provide great golf instruction sessions.

Make More Sand Saves

Luke Donald is among the best young players on the Tour. He’s also among the best at sand saves—with a save percentage of nearly 80 percent. That’s impressive. Obviously, he has sand saves down to a science. For him, the key to making sand saves is adjusting his technique to his lie. He’s learned to hit all kinds of shots from a bunker, like the “fried egg.” To hit a high soft shot with this lie, he stands square to the target line, places more weight on his front foot, and opens up the clubface. These adjustments create a higher, softer shot that rolls toward the hole when it lands.

Sink More Putt

Ben Crane is always among the Tour’s putting leaders. He averages about 27 putts per 18 holes. His edge lies in his solid fundamentals. A strong point is his ability to keep his putter underneath his eye line during the stroke. This symmetry—eyes over the line and putter under the eyes—is critical to sinking putts. It promotes consistency because your eyes help determine how your muscles move. In other words, you putt where you look. And where you look affects perception. Maintaining the eyes over the target line keeps the club moving along the line and directing the ball along this path.

Chip Like A Pro

Jose Maria Olazabal is among the premier short game players in the world. He’s always among the Tour leaders in Scrambling—saving par after missing a green in regulation—with a 69 percent average. Like Ben Crane whose putting technique is solid, Olazabal features a flawless chipping technique. Normally, he uses a piston like pitching approach. In it, the right elbow straightens as it applies force at impact. This increases accuracy because it produces an accelerated stroke and keeps the clubface on line—two keys to great chipping.

Escaping From The Rough

When we think of Tiger Woods, we often think of his booming drives or his deadly approach shots. But Tiger also has an uncanny ability to escape from the heavy rough. It requires both strength and technique—and Tiger has both. You can learn a lot from watching Tiger play shots in the heavy rough. For him the key to clearing heavy rough is rotating his chest and hips, preventing the grass from grabbing the club’s hosel and closing the face. In addition, he holds the clubface open by preventing his forearms from rotating.

If your golf handicap never seems to drop no matter how much you visit the range, focus on learning to save par. Do whatever it takes. Read golf tips on how to chip and putt. Take golf lessons on putting and tackling the rough. And watch how the pros do it. You’ll be surprised just how much you can reduce your golf handicap just by learning to save par.

In golf putting is the name of the game. If you want to quickly reduce your golf handicap, improve your putting. How do you do that? Most experts agree that if you’re serious about improving your putting, you’ll “immerse” yourself in the effort—take golf lessons, read golf tips, and practice as much as you can. They also agree that studying the pros’ putting techniques helps.

But while studying professional golfers often produces valuable golf tips, the modern style of putting may not yield the best results for weekend golfers—at least that’s the opinion of the PGA’s Tom Kite. He thinks weekend golfers shouldn’t putt like the pros at all. Instead, he advocates adopting a different technique—one that h believes can lower your golf handicap dramatically.

More Like Jones Than Woods

Here’s Kite’s theory: Over the years putting has evolved. It’s gone from the wristy stroke of Bobby Jones to the arm-and-shoulder stroke of Tiger Woods. The arm-and-shoulder stroke is fine for professionals, who play on fast, smooth greens and under great pressure. The arm-and-shoulder stroke is highly effective here. It provides control over the putt and also eliminates the influence of the wrists’ smaller muscles. These can twitch when under pressure, causing mistakes.

But the modern stroke may not be right for weekend golfers, who play on slower, bumpier greens and under less pressure. That’s because of two reasons: First, since the modern stroke is longer, it’s also slower. The longer and slower the stroke, the easier it is for the putterhead to go off line. You can’t sink a putt if your putterhead is off line—even if the putt’s speed and roll is perfect.

Second, since the greens weekend players play on aren’t as glass-like as those of the pros, making solid contact is imperative. Slower, bumpier greens require a firmer putt to keep the ball on line—one that can be delivered by using the wrists. A wristy stroke down plays the arms and shoulders. Also, since weekend golfers play under less pressure, they don’t have to worry about twitching.

Support From Jack Nicklaus

Support for Kite’s theory comes from one of the game’s greatest players. If you watch old footage of Jack Nicklaus, you’ll notice a big difference between his approach to putting and Tiger Woods’. Like Woods, Jack is methodical in his basic approach. He carefully studies each putt. And like Woods, he carefully goes through his pre-shot routine. But when it comes to putting the ball, Jack uses more of his wrists than Woods does.

Watching Jack, it almost seems like he “pops” the ball as opposed to stroking it—a good image to keep in your mind, if you adopt this putting style. Also, Jack makes a much shorter stroke than Woods, picking the putterhead up more abruptly and then placing it down on the ball. In fact, Jack’s stroke looks more like a jab than a stroke, with little movement of the arms and shoulders.

Keys To A Wristier Stroke

If you’re committed to changing putting styles, adopting Kite’s approach is worth considering. But you must hold two keys firmly in mind if use his approach. First, keep the blade square to the ball. In the modern stroke, the blade has a tendency to open and close in the course of the stroke. But with Kite’s approach the blade doesn’t have time to open much. In fact, keep the idea of squaring the blade to the ball as your primary swing thought.

Second, make the putter head finish on the ground. In the modern stroke the putterhead keeps moving toward the target after the ball is struck. It’s known as follow-through. It results in hitting up on the putt, causing topped or cut putts. But Kite’s approach eliminates this fault, since there’s no follow-through. Since there’s no follow-through, try hitting the bottom of the ball, not the upper half.

Kite’s idea of using a wristy putting stroke has merit. If you’re looking to improve your putting, consider it. Keep in mind that putting is the most individual of all golfing skills. So the wristier stroke may be better for you than the arm-and-shoulder stroke. But whatever you do, don’t stop taking golf lessons, reading golf tips, or practicing putting. It’s the best way to improve your putting and the quickest way to lower your golf handicap.

Most of us think we sink a lot of short putts. But research indicates otherwise. Weekend golfers sink only about half of their 12-foot putts. While professional golfers under tour conditions sink only about 20 percent of them. The emphasis here, of course, is on “under tour conditions,” which increases putting difficulty.

But sinking more short putts improves your golf handicap, since we usually have many more short putts than long ones during a round. So if you’re really serious about lowering your golf handicap, work on sinking more short putts.

One area of short putting to focus on is alignment. Poor alignment causes more missed short putts than almost anything else. The tips below on help improve alignment.

Correct Shoulder Misalignment

Pulled putts hurts many a weekend golfer. Among the biggest causes of pulled putts is shoulder misalignment. Players with low golf handicaps tend to blame pulled putts on a breakdown of the wrists. But that’s not always the case. If your shoulders are misaligned, you’ll pull putts.

Next time you’re on the practice green, try this simple test: Go through your pre-shot routine. Take your address. Now, bend down and place your club’s shaft lengthwise along your feet so that it’s touching your toes. If the shaft is not running parallel to the target line, you may have discovered why you’re pulling your short putts.

How can you fix this? First, push your hands as close together as possible. The closer your hands, the less likely you are to dip your back shoulder toward the ball, caused by how you grip the club. Second, think of the line of your shoulders as you address the ball. If you’re fighting a pull, make sure your shoulders are parallel to the target line. That way when you swing, it will be along the line of the putt, not out to in.

Aligning The Putterface

In addition to aligning your shoulders properly, your must also align your putterface correctly. The putter’s sweet spot must be perpendicular to the target for the ball to be online and stay that way during the putt. If you’re missing short putts, you could be taking this fundamental for granted—a common error among players with high golf handicaps.

Practicing the credit card drill helps eliminate this problem:

Find a straight 8-foot putt on the practice green and drop a ball down. Go through your normal pre-shot routine, and then take your address. Once you’re set, have a friend switch the ball for a credit card, placing it square to the ball with the long sides pointing toward the hole. Now rise up, stand back, and look along the card’s long edges. These lines should bracket the hole.

If you’re off, repeat the drill, but align the credit card first. Then place the ball on top of it. Now set your putterface square to the edges of the credit card. This allows you to see what straight looks like. After a few practice sessions, you’ll get an idea of what straight really is.

Line-up The Lettering

Another method of improving alignment is perhaps the simplest of all. Find a green where you have a straight putt about 10 to 12 feet. Now drop a ball down and take your address. Align yourself as you normally would. Make sure the clubface is at right angles to the ball. Now, holding the putter tightly, kneel down behind the putter and look over the putterhead to see if you had the putter aligned correctly. If not, keep working on this until you do.

In addition, you can reduce alignment problems when playing by using an old trick that many pros use. Before putting, place a marker behind your ball. Now bend down and align the ball’s lettering so that it’s aiming directly at the hole. Go through your pre-shot routine and take your address. Make sure the putter’s sweet spot is perpendicular to the lettering on the ball before putting. If it is, you’re aligned properly.

Tiger Woods spends about 45 percent of his time on the practice green hitting short putts. That tells you how important sinking those 10 and 12 footers really is. To sink more short putts, take proper alignment seriously. Make sure you are correctly aligned on every putt, even the short ones. Sinking more short putts chop strokes off golf handicaps.
