IMPROVE YOUR PUTTING BY USING A CHALK LINE Tournament Professionals use the following drill to improve their putter face alignment, putting technique and confidence. If you ever attend a professional golf tournament, have a close look at the practice putting green and you will see a number of chalk-lines that have been placed on the green by either the professional or their coaches trying to resolve putting errors immediately. All that’s needed is a carpenter’s chalk line and a bottle of white chalk that can be purchased from your local hardware store for around $20.00. Find a 4 or 5 meter straight uphill putt on the practice green. Professionals typically look for an area near the edge of the green so that the line doesn’t disturb anyone else. Make several putts to ensure there is no break in the putt. Then, place the chalk-line hook inside the putting green cup and snap the chalk line on the green along the intended line of putt.Start about 1 meter from the hole, putt six balls. When you make all six putts in a row, move farther back in 1 meter intervals and repeat the drill until you make all the putts from this new distance. If you miss one ball stay at the distance until you hole all putts successfully. The chalk line allows you to be sure that the white line on the putter face is square to the target which promotes the proper stroke path and provides a visual aid to help you align your feet and body square to the target line. Putting uphill encourages hitting short putts firmly into the cup, which reduces the chances of a weak putt breaking out of the hole. In addition, practicing with six balls from each distance until completed successfully is a great mental drill and will help resolve unseen alignment errors in the stroke.Happy GolfingAlan Wilson PGAwww.qgsgolf.com

For those who have played golf for a few years, it is common knowledge that it is a game where you need to concentrate a lot on the details. Even things like the brand of the golf ball that you are playing with matters a lot when it comes to this game.
The golf grip stands as one of the most important aspects of the game. A major part of learning golf is devoted to mastering the right kind of grip.
In a golf match, about half of the strokes are devoted to putting and thus, it is imperative for you to devote complete attention to this part of your game. It is a major contributor to your score and if you want to be a good golf player, you must make sure that you practice putting will full enthusiasm and dedication.
There are a number of ways in which you can perfect your putter grip. After you learn the basics, you have to understand by yourself and with the help of your coach which grip suits your style of playing the game. Identifying the grip you are comfortable with and then working on it to become an expert of your kind of grip is one of the most important parts of learning the game.
Below is a list of the most popular putting styles that you need to be familiar with:
• The traditional overlap grip: This is by far the grip adopted by the maximum numbers of golf players. This grip consists of placing your left hand on the grip and resting the right hand just below the left. Once in this position, you need to connect both of your hands by covering the fingers of the right hand with the index finger of the left hand.
• The two fingers down grip: For this grip, you need to cover the putter grip with both of your hands. After you do this, you need to place the index fingers of both your hands in such a way that they point towards the putter grip.
• The Claw grip: This grip is considered by experts to be one of the most unusual grips in the game of golf. However, many golfers consider this to be a great grip whenever they face a putting problem. In this grip, you need to place the left hand on the grip and then the right hand above the putter grip. The final step consists of hooking the hand with the help of your right thumb.
• The left below hand grip: Another golfers’ favorite, this grip is the exact opposite of the traditional putting grip. All you need to do is to inverse the positions of your right and left hand.
• The box grip: This is a relatively new kind of grip. It has emerged as the preferred kind of putting grip for a number of golfers after it came into being a few years ago. For this grip, you need to put both your hands side by side in order to make the shoulders level. Then, put your left hand on top of the putting grip and the right hand about an inch below it. This will create a box shape with your hands.
These are the most popular golf grips used by golfers around the world. On these basic grips, each golfer can add his or her own improvisation. So if you are a beginner, start off by going for the grip that suits your playing style best and then gradually improvise on it to improve your game.

Finding the perfect putter for your style of play can be the most difficult club to select. Unlike woods and irons, there is no set formula for fitting someone to the correct putter. The only way to find the right putter for you is to conduct your own search, try some putters out.

A frustration is that even if you find a putter that seems to work very well for you for quite some time, it may not always work that well, and you may have to replace it with a different style putter at some point. It’s just one of the little frustrating parts of the game of golf for some people. So what should you be looking for when shopping for a golf putter?

Perhaps the first thing to consider is the material that is used for the putter head itself. More so than any other golf club in your bag, your putter relies on feel to be used successfully. So the kind of material that is used for the putter head can be important. Unfortunately, there’s almost no end to the different kinds of material that are used for putter heads including stainless steel, brass, copper, aluminum and lots more. The only way to see how the putter head material transmits feel is to try them all out yourself. Lighter materials also tend to contribute to more hand action in the stroke, whereas heavier putter heads tend to slow down the stroke and help it remain more consistent.

The shape of your putter head can also be important. The two main shapes that are in use these days are the blade and the mallet. A blade putter looks like a miniature hockey stick, and the blade can vary from being solid to a more cavity-back design. Again, which style works best for you can only be determined by putting them both to use.

Another consideration with putters is how the shaft connects to the putter head. Some connect in the center of the putter head, whereas others connects at the heel or back of the putter instead. This is another area where there is no right or wrong choice that can be made. It simply depends on which seems to be most comfortable to you as you use it.

No discussion of putters can be complete without also mentioning the longer golf putters that have come into popular use in recent years. Generally, there are two main sizes of these longer putters. One is referred to as the belly putter, and the other is often called a broomstick putter.

Belly putters are usually around 40 in. or so in length and they are designed to be tucked into the body around the abdomen area as an anchor to help stabilize the putter throughout the stroke. This usually helps produce a more consistent putting stroke and eliminates a lot of extra hand movement.

Long putters are made to tuck into the chest area instead, allowing the golfer to take a more upright stance when putting. The hands are usually separated on the putter with one being at the top and the other about midway down the shaft. This kind of putter produces a true are in the swing and if used correctly can encourage a more consistent putting stroke.

It should be obvious that when it comes to golf putters there are plenty of choices that can be made, and the best putter for you is the one that you feel most comfortable with and gives you the best results, whichever one that may be.

Having a balanced putter leads to sound putting. If the putter itself can pass the simple spin and push test, a foundation for good putting can be made. If a putter is not balanced, it will torque at address and during the stroke; the putter will become a variable along with speed, slope of the breaks, greens condition, and length. Confidence in the putter will lead to a solid putting stance and more success.

Most putters will fail one or both of the simple check tests. The first is the spin test. With the grip pointing down, hold the putter just below the head between the palms. Spin the club. The more waggle it has the more unbalanced it is. The second test is the push test. Place the end of the grip on the floor and hold the club with one hand just below the head. With a finger of the free hand, push where the “sweet spot” is marked. If the head moves there is no real “sweet spot.” If the putter fails one or even both, how is the putt going to be accurate?

A proper length of the putter is also a major factor in putting. A proper stance will dictate the proper length of the putter. A solid stance will begin with having the eyes over the ball; this allows the seeing of the desired putting line. Feet should be about shoulder width. Players should place their hips over the heels; this will build the foundation. The arms should drop below the shoulders to allow for a natural pendulum motion. Now the player should grip the putter; this grip will be the proper length for the club. With the off-the-rack putters many players might be gripping the steel shaft. The length should be adjusted. This fitted putter will help dictate a solid stance time after time.

With a balanced and fitted putter, the player’s thoughts such as … the hole is up hill and goes right to left … if I shift into second gear quicker, I can improve gas mileage … the green is a little wet … I wonder if the guys at the office understand my report … can be addressed without the worry of the putter itself or even the stance being a problem.

The secret behind golf is to be comfortable and eliminate as many variables as possible.

All successful putters believe that they are one of the great putters. Average putters always remember the putts they missed, and forget their successful putts. Besides having confidence in themselves, good putters are also confident in their putting technique. You may not yet be a great putter, but start thinking like one and that will soon change.

1. Attitude – It’s all about attitude. Having a good attitude means believing that you are a good putter, being confident in your putt, believing in your capabilities rather than the putting system, and believing that you are going to make a successful putt. Good putters are more likely to make a putt without being afraid of putting. You will never make a good putt if you play golf believing that you cannot make a putt. Try the power of positive thinking, it really works.

2. Believe in the Putt. You will never be a good putter if you just make a putt hoping that it will be successful. Good putters know that they must believe in what they see, accept their decision, and then know it will be a successful putt after deciding on path and speed. Even though you miss, you need to work on having confidence in your putting decisions. You will get better at them with practice.

3. Concentrate On the Putt. Because your goal is to make a successful putt, you must concentrate on everything about putting starting from understanding the green, reading the line, aiming the putter to the hole, and making a decision by yourself. When you are putting, be in the moment. Make sure every aspect of the putt is right, then do it.

4. Believe in Your Feelings and Senses. Sounds too touchy feely? Well Ben Crenshaw, one of the world’s greatest putters, said “If you want to be a good putter, you will have a good feeling when you are on the green”. Good putters believe in their instinct, rather than instruction. They use their feelings, senses, instinct, and imagination. They know the way to putt without knowing “how” to putt.

5. Use your imagination. Putting requires you to see the putt. You must be a good green reader and able to “see” or “feel” the right way to putt. Use your imagination to see the putt to the hole. This will help you read the green and line that your ball will be running on. The more clearly you see the putt, the better your chances will be to succeed.

Putting is probably the single most important golf technique in the game, never forget that half of all strokes allowed for in a par score are putts. The Putting Green is an almost sacred place for golfers. It is where games are won and lost. It looks so easy – there are none of those careful fine points to tune in your swing to achieve the long low drive or the stunning iron shot. Some of the best putters produce astounding strokes with an indifference that suggests disdain to us lesser mortals who struggle with our putters. Improving your putting is a great way to improve your scores quickly but how do you do that – and why should you?
As to why, there is a simple answer which is best illustrated by going back to the last time Tiger Woods won The Open. Sergio Garcia hit almost 80% of the greens and 66% of the fairways, striking the ball well throughout the tournament, but his putting let him down. Even though he hit most of the greens in regulation, Sergio averaged nearly two putts on each of those greens. Tiger won the tournament, he hit far less greens than Sergio but made almost a quarter less strokes on each of those greens. Taken over the entire tournament, this difference is why it was Tiger’s name on the trophy!
Putting makes up over 40 percent of your game, so its importance cannot be over-emphasized. You should devote at least that percentage of your practice time to it. Nothing spoils a good round more than weak putting so when you practice make sure you work on both the mechanics of the stroke and the feel. Putting has often been described as more inspiration than technique and there is no doubt that some good putters simply cannot explain it, they are, as it were, born to it. But the poor putter needn’t give up. Working hard to pick up some essentials, along with a sensible practice regime, will result in steady improvement and the results will soon show – remember that old golfing adage – drive for show and putt for dough! Once your score is consistent and you have developed your game it is time to start thinking about developing feel. Putting feel is an acquired skill, your brain needs to determine how the length of your stroke relates to distance. This begins by ensuring you always make solid contact with the ball, and that comes from those good fundamental techniques you should be practicing. The basic stroke motion is a pendulum action. When putting, your hands should always be slightly ahead of both the club head and the ball. Your arms and shoulders should form a triangle that moves as one during your back swing and stroke – exactly like a pendulum.
There are many different grips demonstrated by the pro’s when putting but it really doesn’t make much difference as long as you know what you’re doing with the putter head. As long as you can keep the edges of the putter square to the target during the stroke you will be OK. For example, keeping your left-hand low tends to keep the face angle more square as it swings up like a pendulum. The ‘up’ motion gets the ball rolling earlier, which creates a straighter line, reducing the potential for break, almost like taking the bottom of the ball and rolling it up over the top. Try experimenting with different grips and see which one works best for you. Putting with your rear arm can give a feeling of acceleration through the putt, which is critical for creating a smooth, end-over-end roll. Rear-arm putting accomplishes this mainly because of the weight of the putter, with two hands it’s easier to make stabbing or decelerating strokes.
You should never aim to get the ball just as far as the hole, especially if you are off the green. Putting from the fringe or even just off the green is very different to putting on the surface of the green. More often than not putts are not hit with enough power and can end up getting bogged down in the longer fringe grass. Even if you are on the green you must hit the ball hard enough – a ball that doesn’t reach the hole has no chance of going in! Any competent golfer will tell you that a properly struck putt should roll approximately seventeen inches past the hole, as if the hole wasn’t there. This definition is based on the work of Dave Pelz, a professional golf teacher and Ex-NASA Physicist who has written may books on the subject, such as ‘The Putting Bible’ and who is widely regarded as the greatest putting coach working today. Of course, this distance is approximate, depending on specific grass types and environmental conditions, it may vary a little either way, but the seventeen-inch distance is the best rule of thumb for overall conditions.
Stance is less likely to be a consideration in putting than in any other stroke. No hard and fast rule can be established, no two golfers follow the same style. A still and steady body position with a motionless head is, however, one of the essentials that all coaches agree on. Putting is much too delicate a process to withstand any body motion. How you stand is a matter of trial and error, if you feel comfortable that is as good a guide as any. An open stance with the right foot well up to the ball can to be a good position, your body should rest easily on your legs. The length of the club will dictate any bend in the knees but always remember the three golden rules of golf when making your putt – keep your head still, keep your head still, keep your head very still!
Sometimes your putting goes wrong in the middle of a round – but with just a few seconds of concentration you can generally get it back on track – provided that you do your practice. Step off to the side at a time when it won’t delay play and just close your eyes for a few seconds. Swing your arms the way you do on a putt, just like you do when you practice – is your body balanced? Is your head still? Are you achieving the pendulum motion? Check these simple things and you will soon get your putting back on track.
Putting is the greatest test of skill on the golf course and requires regular, high quality practice sessions, ideally on a putting green or with something that represents an actual hole as nearly as possible. Most golfers typically practice putting whenever they can find a suitable surface either outdoors or indoors. It is the most neglected part of the practice routine of many amateur golfers and yet it is the one thing that can reduce your score overnight. If you want to improve your golf techniques quickly and get your handicap down- practice your putting.

If you play golf you know that a missed two foot putt will cost you as many strokes on your score card as a 280 yard drive that splits the fairway. It is very unfortunate but most golfers don’t practice their putting as much as they should, instead they go to the driving range and hit driver after driver and then wonder why they three putt on the greens, thus ruining what could have been a great round.
What we have put together are a few tips that will help you become more like a Tiger Woods putter and help you to alleviate those unnecessary stokes in your round.
How to Understand the Grain on the Green
Tiger Woods understands what the grain on the green is telling him. For example, the grain of the green will follow the sun. So when you are looking at your putt you need to locate the sun. This will let you know if you are putting with the grain, against the grain or across the grain. Knowing this will help you determine the speed of the putt and how much break to play. For instance, if you are putting downhill into the sun you are putting with the grain and you are going to have a very fast putt so you will need to add more break and just get it started online and gravity will do the rest.
Reading the Putt
Reading the putt correctly takes practice. Watch when Tiger is putting, he has a routine that he does every time (unless it is a tap in). He marks his ball, and then he proceeds to walk around the entire circumference of his putt. What is he doing? First he is looking at the grain, next he is looking at the angulations of the green and third, he is feeling the green. When he is walking around the green he is also feeling the green with his feet. This will help to feel slight angulations that maybe very hard to see. Try this sometime especially when you are playing an unfamiliar course you’ll be surprised by what your feet will tell you.
Know the Local Knowledge
One thing that many golfers don’t even think to do is learn the local knowledge. This can help you immensely on the course. What do mean by this? Well each course has its own little quirks, for example most putts tend to break towards the water. If you live near mountains you will learn that the course may lean toward the valley there for affecting your putt. This type of knowledge will help you become a more Tiger Woods like putter because he knows the local knowledge on all the courses he plays and knows that some putts may look like they should to the right but it actually does the complete opposite.
So in conclusion if you want to be a Tiger Woods putter and not a three putter-learn the grain, read the greens. And ask about the local knowledge for any course you play.

I’m not a huge golf fan, but like most people, I know Tiger Woods as the best golfer of our generation. He is a true master. A natural.

Even though he is considered one of the best golfers of all time, Tiger Woods needs to practice to stay on top of his game. His philosophy and approach to practice and where he devotes his focus is very surprising.

To simplify the game of golf, there are two major skills needed, putting and swinging. Your swing drives the ball down the fairway a long distance onto the green where you then putt the ball a short distance into the hole. The fewer times you hit the ball to reach the hole the better.

Tiger Woods has a great putt. In fact, his putt gets all the glory, we’ve all seen the commercial where he sinks a putt, pumps his fist in victory and drives away in a new Cadillac. But it is his phenomenal swing that separates him from the rest of the field. It is truly one of the sweetest and smoothest in the history of the sport.

So what do you think? When Tiger Woods heads out of the club house for his morning practice, where does he spend his time and energy?

Does he head to the practice green to work on his biggest weakness, his putting or does he head for the driving range to work on the biggest strength, his swing?

–Tiger Woods spends 20% of his practice time on his weakness and 80% on his strength.

Surprised? I was.

He knows (and I learned) that working on the things you are good at gives you more energy, more motivation and ultimately more success.

His work smart ethic is to focus on his natural strengths. By doing so he makes them sharper and they become an even stronger asset to his game.

It is practice and it is effort, but because his swing is natural to him, he enjoys working at it and getting it just right. For him seeing the ball fly down the fairway with just the right angle and correct distance is gratifying.

On the other hand, he works on his weaknesses just enough to keep them from hindering him, holding him back or getting in his way to success.

The Tiger Woods story is a reminder that we all have natural strengths and weaknesses. It’s where we spend our energy and time that makes all the difference.

My challenge to you is to think about your business. How are you investing your time and energy within your business? On your strengths, the things you enjoy doing or on your weaknesses, the things you really struggle with?

In future issues, we will explore how you can focus on the things you enjoy doing and less on the things you don’t.
