We all know that Tiger Woods is the greatest Golfer in recent times, arguably the greatest there has ever been. Since turning professional in 1996 he has a record that is unprecedented. In that time he has won 14 Major Championships and 93 Tournaments in total. He is currently ranked number 1 in the world and his 2009 Prize money earnings is in excess of $10m. So one question that we’d all be interested in knowing the answer to is “What Clubs Does Tiger Woods Use”? You thought I’d be asking him something else, didn’t you? Keep your mind on golf.

Now you’ll have to take into account that he probably has prototype clubs that are custom made to tailor to his own preferences, however these are the models and designs that he’s chosen:

What Driver Does Tiger Woods Use? Tiger uses the Nike SQ Dymo Driver, this club has been designed to accommodate all levels of golfers needs and provide an unbelievable combination of distance and performance. Nike have taken into account loft / lie angles, spin rate, size of the head and its geometry and centre of gravity to optimize DYMO, which stands for Dynamic Moment of Inertia, which in turn will maximize the distance and control you’ll get for the loft chosen. The lower the loft the higher and further forward the centre of gravity is placed to help reduce spin rate and therefore lower trajectory and increase distance.

What Irons Does Tiger Woods Use? He uses the Nike Victory Red TW Blades, and helped with the design of these clubs, so that they offer the control and workability that he demands. The club head us made of 1025 Forged Carbon Steel and has a CNC milled face and have a different back pad and thicker toe than the original Nike Blade. They are built for the better player, but will provide exceptional feel and control.

What Wedges Does Tiger Woods Use? He uses the Nike 56 degree VR SW and Nike 60 degree SV LW, both have aggressive high rev grooves, which and designed and milled into the club head to produce maximum spin for increased control and shot placement. They have exceptional feel and are perfect for the accomplished player.

What Putter does Tiger Woods Use? Tiger uses the Scotty Cameron Newport 2 putter, which is Scotty’s most technologically advanced putters, it has been expertly refined and improved from subtle milling enhancements to its new sole profile. The stepless shaft provides a clean appearance, and the Newport 2 comes with a milled sight line in the flange and its high toe profile will help you to get the correct setup at address.

Fortunately, you can find these at Hole In One Golf and the prices are amazing.

Golf ball markers… probably the least talked about item “in your bag”, but something that every golfer uses. Boring subject? Yes. But have you really ever thought about your ball marker? Some people are superstitious about what they use, some just use whatever is in their pocket at the time. Rule 20-1 discusses the ball marker but doesn’t specify what you can use. A coin, rock, button, or even a beer can is legal. Prior to the early 1950’s, ball markers were not used. Instead, if your opponents ball was more than 6″ away from yours, your only option was to chip over their ball, or go around it. It was called a “stymie” and from what I’ve read, it was often used to prevent your opponent from having a clear putt to the hole. You can read more about the stymie here. Commercially sold ball markers come in all sizes, shapes, colors, and forms. Some are inexpensive, some aren’t cheap. They usually range in size from a dime to a quarter. Some come with matching divot tools. I usually use the free ones you receive at golf tournaments, or whatever is attached to my glove or in my pocket (usually coins). Some of the more popular ball markers have magnets attached to them and can be clipped to your hat. They are very convenient to use and helps avoid having to dig through your pocket looking for the ball mark.

In addition to “fun” ball markers like the happy face above, there are also markers out there that can help your game. This one actually looks useful in that you can set up your aim point using the guide on the marker, pick up your ball, and while cleaning it, still read the green.

Professional golfers are like us. They use a variety of ball markers with the most popular apparently being loose change. Rory Mcilroy uses an American 50 cent piece, and Stephen Ames uses a Canadian dollar. From what I understand, some of the LPGA players are using custom made ball markers. Interested in seeing photographs of what some of the Pro’s use? Click Here.

Golf instructors often talk about the transition in the golf swing as that pause between completing the backswing and starting the downswing. They often suggest that slowing down the transition is one of the most important keys to hitting a good shot.

Well, I’m not qualified to comment on the technicalities of the golf swing. However, I am qualified to comment on what for me is an even more important transition in golf psychology. It’s the transition from the conscious analytical planning phase of your pre-shot routine to the unconscious instinctive phase of actually hitting the ball. Unlike the pause at the top of the backswing, the faster you can comfortably make this transition, the better and more consistently you’ll find yourself striking the ball or rolling the putt.

If you watch the top players in the world, like Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, you’ll notice that they take very little time between taking their chosen club out of the bag and hitting the ball. A recent study suggested that Tiger and Phil consistently take around 11 to 12 seconds to do this and they are very consistent with the timing. If they took any longer, they often hit a less than good shot – these guys don’t hit many downright bad shots.

So what do they do in those 11 to 12 seconds? Well, every player has his own idiosyncrasies, including re-gripping, waggling, breathing, blinking and countless other rituals. However, they all seem to

What’s interesting is that they don’t seem at all rushed in fitting all that into such an apparently short time. They certainly don’t have any spare time for self doubt and that little voice in their head telling them they’re doing it all wrong! In fact, they complete the process like they’re in some sort of trance and that means that they are leaving the whole process to their unconscious golf mind, just like driving a car or riding a bike.

Now some of the players you watch on TV or out on the course take a lot longer to make this transition and the time they take is less consistent. How well did you see them play? If you watched Sergio Garcia playing golf a few years ago, you’d have often seen him take an inordinately long time to hit the ball. He had a pained expression on his face that suggested he was experiencing a lot of negative self-talk and he seemed to be wringing the life out of the club as he repeatedly re-gripped his hands. It’s no surprise that his golf was inconsistent at best and he certainly didn’t seem to be enjoying his golf.

So how do I speed up my transition from taking my club out to hitting the ball, I hear you say. Well one way is to make the whole process an instinctive or unconscious activity. Streamline your own transition process and use it every time you hit a shot on the golf course, at the driving range, on the practice putting green and in your mental golf practice. You do practice and play golf in your mind, now don’t you?

I’m not a huge golf fan, but like most people, I know Tiger Woods as the best golfer of our generation. He is a true master. A natural.

Even though he is considered one of the best golfers of all time, Tiger Woods needs to practice to stay on top of his game. His philosophy and approach to practice and where he devotes his focus is very surprising.

To simplify the game of golf, there are two major skills needed, putting and swinging. Your swing drives the ball down the fairway a long distance onto the green where you then putt the ball a short distance into the hole. The fewer times you hit the ball to reach the hole the better.

Tiger Woods has a great putt. In fact, his putt gets all the glory, we’ve all seen the commercial where he sinks a putt, pumps his fist in victory and drives away in a new Cadillac. But it is his phenomenal swing that separates him from the rest of the field. It is truly one of the sweetest and smoothest in the history of the sport.

So what do you think? When Tiger Woods heads out of the club house for his morning practice, where does he spend his time and energy?

Does he head to the practice green to work on his biggest weakness, his putting or does he head for the driving range to work on the biggest strength, his swing?

–Tiger Woods spends 20% of his practice time on his weakness and 80% on his strength.

Surprised? I was.

He knows (and I learned) that working on the things you are good at gives you more energy, more motivation and ultimately more success.

His work smart ethic is to focus on his natural strengths. By doing so he makes them sharper and they become an even stronger asset to his game.

It is practice and it is effort, but because his swing is natural to him, he enjoys working at it and getting it just right. For him seeing the ball fly down the fairway with just the right angle and correct distance is gratifying.

On the other hand, he works on his weaknesses just enough to keep them from hindering him, holding him back or getting in his way to success.

The Tiger Woods story is a reminder that we all have natural strengths and weaknesses. It’s where we spend our energy and time that makes all the difference.

My challenge to you is to think about your business. How are you investing your time and energy within your business? On your strengths, the things you enjoy doing or on your weaknesses, the things you really struggle with?

In future issues, we will explore how you can focus on the things you enjoy doing and less on the things you don’t.

Tiger Woods, the world number one, wins most of his tournament and now clinches the crown for greatest putter all time. The golfer made history and will continue to make new record. He is a legendary figure in golf world.

Playing career: 1996-According to our voters, consider yourself lucky — for the past 14 Tour seasons you’ve been paying witness to the greatest putter of all time, Tiger Woods. As you sit, you can probably peel off half a dozen highlight-reel putts Tiger has made in his career: The finger-pointing bomb at Valhalla on the first playoff hole against Bob May at the 2000 PGA Championship; the double-fist-pumping birdie on the 72nd hole of the 2008 U.S. Open to force a Monday playoff against Rocco Mediate; the hat-throwing downhill slider to snatch the 2008 Bay Hill Invitational from Bart Bryant; or the original-Tiger-fist-pump-inducing 14-footer on the island green at TPC Sawgrass to finish off his improbable comeback against Trip Kuehne at the 1994 U.S. Amateur. You can bet there’s more to come.

Tiger is the greatest putter of all time because he makes the ones he should (he was 1 of only 6 players to make every putt inside three feet last year on Tour), and the ones he shouldn’t. From 2004 to 2008, Tiger’s Average Distance of Putts Made, a somewhat cerebral stat that calculates the total distance of putts holed for a given tournament, is 6 feet longer than the Tour average. He’s an expert at making long putts other golfers miss.

Tiger has always been erratic off the tee. His iron game is elite. When he wins, however, it’s because his putting is on. When all three elements come together he laps the field in victories so lopsided the whole course looks like its listing in water.

Stroke analysis: Woods isn’t as technical as some other players, but you wouldn’t know it by his putting. His setup is fundamentally perfect with everything square, especially his forearms and the puttershaft — it looks like they’re the same line. I’m sure he practices this — a lot. When your setup is this good, you’re going to make a lot of putts. And when you combine it with an equally sound stroke (he moves through the ball like it’s invisible), you make a lot of history.

Seems like every time he has a putt of 30 feet or more, the ball grazes the hole or finishes a foot away for Tiger Woods.

No. 1, he puts a great roll on the ball, and that’s because his mechanics are very solid. The face of his putter is squaring to the path at impact, not cutting against it, and he has that constant acceleration. He never looks like he’s holding the putter back or accelerating it; it looks like the putter accelerates itself. And finally, he practices long, breaking putts. You’ve got to hit it solid to be close to the hole from long range.

Tiger talks about releasing the putterhead.

That’s a word that describes a specific feel for a very good player. It goes back to the pendulum: if you keep your center (head and sternum) still and you let the weight of the putter go past your center, that’s releasing the putter. I don’t think it’s flipping the putter or necessarily closing the face; it just has to do with simply letting the putter go past your center.

Is there a drill you’d recommend for short putts, long putts, or both?

Hit your long putt first, then try and convert the short one.

Most golfers have what I like to refer to as a signature backstroke. They take the club back the same distance for almost all putts. Let’s say it’s 12 inches – if they take it back 12 inches on a 4-foot putt their brain starts screaming, “Slow down!” If they take it back 12 inches on a 40-foot putt their brain screams, “Speed up!” Ultimately, what you really want to learn is what length backstroke is right for each putt. If you’ve got a 4-foot putt you should really have a backstroke of 6 inches. (Normal green speed, stimped at 10). If you’ve got a 40-foot putt you really need a backstroke that’s somewhere around 15 inches, so you’re allowing the putterhead to create its own momentum.

Think about a pendulum: A pendulum you swing way back and the distance it travels determines how fast it moves forward. If you swung it 6 inches it would swing slower than if you swung it 15 inches. What happens with most people is they’re controlling the putter’s speed versus letting it swing by itself. If you look at the best putters, they have a constant rate of acceleration and an equal back and through motion.

Any advice for the weekend golfer?

There are 10 people come through our short game school regularly, and I think 70 percent have the wrong putter; it’s not the right specifications for them. So they’re never going to get better. It’s like glasses: You won’t see clearly until you have the right specs.

Stop wasting your time with band-aids and quick fixes that don’t do anything. Get to the heart of the problem, and get fitted.
